FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18California-Davis at Oregon State;Gill Coliseum; 7 p.m.

Oregon State gets its last look at Gill Coliseum - and five seniors get their last look at the arena as OSU wrestlers - when the Beavers finish the regular season this week. Oregon State (11-8-1 overall, 6-2-1 Pacific-10) and UCD (5-4-1, 4-3-1) meet on Friday at 7 p.m.

'It's the last time at home and we have five seniors we'll be saying goodbye to - Adam Daniel, Matt Ellis, Joel Gibson, Steve Grayson and Tim Norman,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'Those five are a great group of guys and they'll represent Oregon State University very well.

'We're looking for a good meet and then we'll have our last-minute preparations for Pac-10s the following week.'

The Beavers will be trying to build on last weekend, when they defeated Boise State 27-12 at home and then went on the road for a 21-18 win at Oregon for a sweep of the season's Civil War series.

'We'll have a little momentum if we keep it going, keep it rolling,' Wells said. 'We want to continue the aggressive style of wrestling we've shown this last couple of weeks and build a little momentum. Again, we've got some individual opportunities to improve seeds (for the Pac-10 Championships) based on how we perform. We're really looking forward to the opportunity.'

Ellis broke back into one set of national rankings this week and rose in the other at 165 pounds. Ellis returned to the Amateur Wrestling News national rankings at No. 16 and moved up two places to No. 16 in the InterMat rankings after going against two nationally ranked wrestlers last week; he defeated Boise State's Russell Brunson and lost to Oregon's Joey Bracamonte.

OSU heavyweight Ty Watterson held his position in the national rankings at No. 13 by AWN and No. 14 by IM after a second straight week of being idle due to injury. The Beavers are hoping Watterson and 133-pounder Bobby Pfennigs may return to the lineup against UCD.

'UC-Davis is getting better, as several of the Pac-10 schools are, and that's a good thing,' Wells said. 'They've got pretty good upper weights and a couple of real good kids in the lower weights so I think it's going to be a real good meet.'

California-Davis wrestled once last weekend, winning at Stanford 21-14 in a Pac-10 dual meet. The Aggies have one nationally ranked wrestler, as 133-pounder Derek Moore is ranked No. 15 by both AWN and IM.

OREGON STATE ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: Oregon State has an all-time record of 8-0 against California-Davis in a dual meet series dating back to 1983. Last season, OSU took a 20-15 win in Davis.

OREGON STATE'S LATEST MEETS: Oregon State swept a pair of Pacific-10 duals last week. The Beavers beat Boise State 27-12 at home on Feb. 11, then hit the road for a 21-18 win at Oregon on Feb. 13.

On Feb. 11, Oregon State 165-pounder Matt Ellis won a battle of nationally ranked wrestlers as Oregon State beat Boise State 27-12 at Gill Coliseum. OSU heavyweight Jamie Rakevich knocked off another nationally ranked Bronco as the Beavers won during their annual OSU Wrestling Homecoming. The Beavers also got major decisions from 141-pounder Tim Norman, 157-pounder Tony Hook and 184-pounder Dan Pitsch. OSU reeled off four straight wins midway through the meet from 157 through 184 pounds to clinch the victory. Ellis, ranked 18th by InterMat, took a 7-4 decision over BSU's Russell Brunson, ranked 15th by both Amateur Wrestling News and IM. Rakevich, filling in for Ty Watterson, went to double overtime for a 5-4 victory over the Broncos' Eric Smith, who is ranked 19th by AWN and 17th by IM. The alums on hand for the OSU Wrestling Homecoming represented 14 individual conference championships, 12 All-America finishes and three individual NCAA titles during their careers.

On Feb. 13, Oregon State heavyweight Jamie Rakevich's takedown with 17 seconds left in the day's final match gave him a come-from-behind win and handed the Beavers a 21-18 win over Oregon at McArthur Court. With Rakevich's 4-3 win over Oregon's Cody Parker, OSU swept the season's Civil War series and it gave the Beavers a 101-24-4 edge in the all-time series. Parker had gained the advantage with a takedown midway through the first period and Rakevich escaped seconds later. The wrestlers traded escapes to start the second and third periods, leaving Parker ahead 3-2 with the clock ticking down. With the wrestlers near the edge of the mat, Rakevich spotted an opening and shot. He scored the takedown with 17 seconds left, then rode Parker to the final buzzer for a 4-3 win that sent his teammates leaping in celebration. OSU 165-pounder Matt Ellis lost a matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers, falling 3-1 to Joey Bracamonte when Bracamonte scored a takedown with 4 seconds left in the match. Bracamonte, ranked No. 1 in the Pac-10, is ranked No. 18 in the nation by AWN and No. 17 by IM; Ellis, ranked No. 2 in the conference, is ranked No. 18 in the nation by IM.

OREGON STATE HEAD COACH Joe Wells: Joe Wells, who is in his 13th season as Oregon State's head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and 4 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships during his time at OSU.

The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State in 2001 was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 147-92-2 for a winning percentage of .618.

The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 4 times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.

Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 17 All-Americans and 22 conference champions.

Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.

Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and was the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OREGON STATE THIRD IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were third in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools going into the 2004-05 season. OSU currently has an all-time dual meet record of 881-284-25 and a .751 winning percentage.

OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Now in their 49th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 364-73-6 in the arena for a winning percentage of .828. This season, OSU is 3-3-1 at home. OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 14 times, including 2002, and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.
