Four Golden Bears Traveling to USA National Team Tryouts
Feb. 18, 2005
BERKELEY, CA - Four members of the University of California volleyball program - head coach Rich Feller, assistant coach Matt McShane, sophomore setter Samantha Carter and junior middle hitter Alicia Powers - will be traveling to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Feb. 25-27, to participate in the first round of tryouts for the USA 2008 Olympic volleyball team.
Feller, who was an assistant coach for the USA National Team from 1997-98, will be evaluating and helping new USA National Team coach Lang Ping begin the process of selecting her 2008 Olympic squad. McShane will be 'on court' as one of the tryout's drill coaches. Powers and Carter will be among over 50 college and former collegiate stars trying out for a spot on United States team that will compete at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
'I am honored to be included in the selection process this year,' said Feller. 'Alicia and Sam are ready to test their skills in volleyball's best arena and I was planning on merely going along for support. Then Tom Pingle, USA Player Development Director, asked me if I would help in the evaluation. Matt and I have both had experience in selecting and training national team players, and were both involved in the national team tryouts in 1997. Matt has a long standing relationship with Lang Ping and I know she will value his input as well.'
Last season, Carter and Powers helped the Bears to a 17-12 record, a third-straight NCAA tournament appearance, and both players were honorable mention All-Pac-10 selections.
