Freeman Leads WSU Past Portland
Feb. 18, 2005
PASCO, Wash. -- - James Freeman threw seven strong innings in leading Washington State to a 4-1 non-conference baseball win over the Portland Pilots here Friday in the first of a four-game series at Dust Devil Stadium.
Freeman (2-0) allowed just two hits and one run as the Cougars (4-3) overcame the Pilots early 1-0 lead. Dane Renkert picked up the save, throwing the final two innings while allowing just one hit.
Josh Roberts (0-1) took the loss for Portland (1-3), allowing all four runs and 10 hits. Only two of the runs off Roberts were earned. He walked four and struck out four before Brian Yoakum recorded the final out in the eighth inning.
Portland broke into the scoring column first with a single tally in the third inning. Catcher Joe Watson walked to open the inning, but was forced at second when Billy Krause grounded to the pitcher. One out later Gustaf Little tripled to the wall in right center, pushing Krause home with the Pilots only run.
WSU took the lead in the bottom of the third with three consecutive hits and one Pilot error. Jay Miller singled with one out, moved to third on Brady Everett's single and scored when McAngus singled to left field. Everett then scored on an error as the Pilots tried to force McAngus at second base off Zach Kosturos' fielder's choice grounder.
WSU added their third run off Roberts in the fourth when Rubin singled, stole second and scored on Jason Freeman's single to left field.
The Cougars final run came in the fifth inning when McAngus reached base on a fielding error and later came home when Thomas drew a bases loaded walk. WSU had a chance to break the game open in the fifth, but Travis Vetters made a diving catch of Rubin's bases loaded blast to the wall in right field with two outs.
The two teams are slated to play a noon doubleheader Saturday, then finish the series Sunday with a single game at noon.
