Stanford Disarms USC, 71-62

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Matt Haryasz scored a career-high 23 points to gowith 11 rebounds in helping Stanford beat Southern California 71-62 on Thursdaynight.
Fred Washington, making his first career start, added 22 points, sevenrebounds and four assists as the Cardinal (14-9, 8-5 Pac-10) beat the Trojans(10-15, 3-11) for the sixth time in seven meetings.
Greg Pruitt matched his career high with 23 points for USC, which dropped to1-9 on the road. Pruitt made a career-high seven 3-pointers. Dwayne Shacklefordadded 11 points.
Washington filled in for Dan Grunfeld, Stanford's leading scorer, who torethe ACL in his right knee against California on Saturday and will miss the restof the season. He added a dimension of speed, helping Stanford outscore USC16-0 on fast-break points. He also had five dunks.
The Cardinal are down to eight scholarship players after losing Grunfeld.They had two players leave the team to focus on football, lost another to aninjury during the season and another to academic ineligibility.
The Cardinal outscored USC 21-9 in the first eight minutes of the secondhalf as they effectively went inside to Washington and Haryasz, who combinedfor 18 of those points.
Stanford built a 63-49 lead on Haryasz's layin with 6:36 left but theTrojans stayed close with their 3-point shooting.
Lodrick Stewart sank a 3-pointer to bring the Trojans within 65-62 with 2:33remaining. USC made three 3-pointers during its 13-2 run and was 17-of-27 forthe game.
Washington scored 12 of Stanford's first 20 points but Pruitt was moreeffective for the Trojans, making his first four 3-pointers and six of seven asUSC built a 35-32 halftime lead.
Pruitt, who scored a career-high 23 against Stanford in the teams' previousmeeting, set his career high for 3-point field goals made with his first-halfperformance.
