Feb. 19, 2005
Stanford, CA - The ninth-ranked UCLA gymnastics team recorded its second-highest road score of the season, defeating Stanford at Maples Pavilion, 196.3-194.625. Junior Kate Richardson won all three events in which she competed (vault, beam and floor), and UCLA swept the top 3 all-around placements, with freshman Tasha Schwikert placing first (39.4), freshman Jordan Schwikert placing second (39.175) and senior Kristen Maloney placing third (39.15).
It was a hotly-contested race in the first two rotations. In rotation one, UCLA led by a narrow margin, 49.075-49.0. The Bruins started the meet on the uneven bars. J. Schwikert and Maloney each scored 9.875, and T. Schwikert ended the set with a team-best 9.9. Stanford matched UCLA score-for-score on vault, with freshman Liz Tricase leading the way with a 9.9.
Rotation two was just as even, with UCLA totaling 49.225 on vault, and Stanford earning 49.25 on the uneven bars to make the score 98.3-98.25 UCLA at the halfway mark. Richardson led the way for the Bruins on vault, earning a 9.925. T. Schwikert and Maloney contributed a pair of 9.875s. Tricase also led Stanford on bars, scoring a meet-high 9.925.
UCLA pulled away in the third rotation, scoring a 49.225 on floor while Stanford stumbled on beam and totaled just 47.55. Bruin senior Christie Tedmon led off the rotation with a 9.75. J. Schwikert contributed a 9.85, followed by first-place scores of 9.925 from Maloney and then Richardson. Stanford was unable to score higher than 9.725 on beam and had to count low marks of 9.3 and 9.25.
Leading 147.525-145.8, UCLA just needed to be steady on beam in the final rotation and accomplished that task with a 48.775. Richardson provided the meet's highest beam score with a 9.9, and T. Schwikert added a 9.85 for second place. Freshman Lindsey Vanden Eykel placed third with a career-high tying 9.75.
