Feb. 18, 2005
LONG BEACH, CA - Led by the solid pitching of starter Adam Gold and reliever Travis Talbott, the California baseball team upset No. 20 Long Beach State, 3-2, Friday night at Blair Field. The Golden Bears improved to 4-4 on the season, while the 49ers fell to 5-4.
Gold, a junior right-hander who had defeated then-No. 9-ranked Long Beach State last season, was again stellar against the 49ers, pitching 7.0 innings with five hits, no earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts to even his record to 1-1. Senior left-hander Travis Talbott earned his second save of the season, throwing the final 2.0 innings with one hit, no runs, no walks and four strikeouts, including striking out the side in the eighth inning.
Cal scored a run in the second inning when junior designated hitter Allen Craig led off with a double off of Long Beach State starter Cesar Ramos (2-2, 6.0 innings, six hits, one earned run, one walk, six strikeouts). Craig later scored on a RBI single to left field by sophomore catcher Garrett Bussiere. The Bears added two more runs in the fourth inning on freshman right fielder Jason Corder's RBI groundout and senior third baseman Matt Einspahr two-out RBI single.
The 49ers got their pair of unearned runs via a two-run single by Evan Longoria in the fifth inning.
Besides RBI singles by Bussiere and Einspahr, senior James Holder led off the fourth inning with a single to short and Cal's freshman shortstop, Kyle Spraker, had two of the Bears' six hits on the evening.
Cal next plays Long Beach State in the second game of the three-game series, Saturday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. at Blair Field in Long Beach.
