Cougars Drop A Double Header to Portland
Feb. 19, 2005
PASCO, Wash. -- - Washington State's Zach Kosturos collected five hits, including two triples and a double, but it was to no avail as the Portland Pilots picked up 10-5 and 10-6 non-conference baseball wins over host WSU Saturday at Dust Devil Stadium.
WSU (4-5) starter Jayson Miller (0-1) took the loss in the first game and starter Travis Webb (0-1) lost the second game. Portland (3-3) starter Given Kutz (1-1) went the distance in the nightcap, scattering 12 Cougar hits, while Pilot starter Sean Sargent (1-0) captured the first game victory with a solid seven innings.
Kosturos and second baseman Jeff Miller provided much of WSU's offense in the doubleheader. Kosturos finished the afternoon 5-for-9 with three extra base hits, while Miller was 4-for-8, including a double. The two accounted for nine of WSU's 20 hits, eight in the opener and 12 in the nightcap.
Jason Krohn and Travis Vetters did much of the offensive damage for Portland, combining for 11 of the Pilots 27 hits. Ten Pilots drove home at least one run in the two games.
In the opener, Portland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and then sent seven runs home in the eighth inning to take a 10-1 lead. The Cougars countered with one run in their half of the third and scored four times in the eighth, could not mount any other serious threats.
Portland's Gustaf Little drove home three runs in the opener, while Vetters and Krohn each had three hits. Catcher Joe Watson had the big blow in the third inning, a two-run double to left field. In the eighth inning, Little had a two-run single, while Nik Kosach, Krohn and Jesse Rodgers each had run-scoring singles.
In the nightcap WSU went ahead 2-1 in the second inning on Jeff Miller's run-scoring double and Garrett Kimbrel's single. WSU added a single tally in the sixth when Kosturos led off the frame with a double to left center and scored one out later on a Jeff Miller single. Kosturos again did the damage in the eighth, collecting a triple with one out. He then scored on Nick Hall's soft groundout to second base.
WSU's final two runs came in the ninth when Jay Miller blasted a two-out home run over the left centerfield fence. It was his first home run of the year.
Meanwhile, Portland scored an unearned run in the first and two more runs in the third, thanks to back-to-back doubles by Little and Kosach. Kosach then scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth Krohn doubled home the second of two Pilot runs. Portland's three-run uprising in the eighth was fueled by Ehlers' run-scoring single and Riley Snell's single that pushed two more runs home. Portland's final two runs in the ninth were unearned. Krohn had the big blow, a triple that scored the final run.
The Cougars and Pilots conclude their four-game series Sunday with a single game at noon.
