Feb. 19, 2005

Chicago, Ill. - The Stanford men's tennis team suffered its third straight defeat at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship in Chicago on Saturday morning, falling to No. 11 seed USC in the 13th place match, 4-3. The Cardinal drops to 6-3 on the season, while the Trojans improve to 4-4.

Stanford surrendered the doubles point for the third straight dual match to begin the contest. The No. 2 ranked tandem of senior Sam Warburg and KC Corkery defeated USC's Drew Hoskins and Kaes Van't Hof, 8-4, to give the Cardinal an early advantage. The Trojan pairing of Brian Wright and Adam Loucks evened the score at one with an 8-3 victory over sophomore James Wan and junior Jon Wong at the No. 3 doubles position. The doubles point was decided at the No. 2 spot, where USC's Johan Berg and Jamir Al-Agba came back from being down 4-1 in the tiebreaker to defeat senior Phil Sheng and sophomore Eric McKean, 9-8 (6).

The Cardinal was strong at the top of the singles lineup once again, as Warburg and Corkery recorded straight set wins at the top two singles positions. Warburg defeated No. 89 ranked Al-Agba at the No. 1 spot 7-6 (4), 6-3, while Corkery dispatched No. 116 ranked Hoskins at the No. 2 position 6-3, 6-2. Wan registered a victory over Wright at the No. 4 spot 6-0, 6-1 to round out the Cardinal wins.

Sheng dropped just his second singles contest in dual match play this season, falling to No. 97 ranked Berg at the No. 3 position 7-6 (6), 6-4. Wong, playing in just his second singles contest of the season at the No. 6 spot, fell to Loucks 6-4, 6-2. The dual match was decided at the No. 5 position for the second straight day, as freshman Phil Kao was defeated by Van't Hof in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

The match pitted two of the most successful programs in the 30-year history of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship against each other. Stanford ranks first in tournament history with 77 wins, while USC ranks fourth with 48 wins in 25 tournament appearances.

The Cardinal will get another shot at USC next weekend, as the squad travels to Los Angeles for dual matches against UCLA on Friday, and the Trojans on Saturday.
