Severson Throws One-Hit Shutout Win Over Hofstra

Tampa, Fla. - Junior softball pitcher Laura Severson threw a one-hit shutout win over Hofstra in no. 6 Stanford's 6-0 victory at the South Florida/Wilson Tournament in Tampa, Florida. The Cardinal improve to 7-1 on the year while the Pride fall to 0-2 to open their season.
With two outs on the board in the bottom of the second, freshman Michelle Smith hit her fourth homerun of the season to right centerfield. Designated player Michelle Thiry walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Freshman Becky McCullough hit her first collegiate homerun - a two-run shot down the leftfield line - to make the score, 3-0.
Stanford started off the bottom of the third with an infield single by Lauren Lappin. Lappin stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Leah Nelson scored Lappin on a fly ball to centerfield.
The Cardinal would score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Pinch hitter Shoney Hixson got things going with a bloop single to shallow left centerfield. Freshman Erin Howe then homered to left centerfield to put Stanford up, 6-0.
Junior pitcher Laura Severson (5-1) picked up the win in the circle, scattering one hit over seven innings of work with nine strikeouts and no walks on the night. The nine K's ties a career high for Severson. Callie Osborne (0-2) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing four runs on three hits in four innings of work. She had four walks and three strikeouts on the night.
