UW Gymnasts Defeat Cal
Feb. 18, 2005
Berkeley, Calif. - Washington senior Carly Dockendorf and sophomore Chelsea Bakken each won two individual event titles as the No. 23 Huskies downed the California Golden Bears 191.225-190.875 in a Pac-10 gymnastics meet at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif., on Friday evening. The Huskies (9-4, 4-2) scored season-lows on vault, bars and beam and recorded the team's lowest total score since a Jan. 8, 1999 meet versus Georgia.
Dockendorf and Bakken tied Cal's My-Lan Dodd, who is from Seattle's Garfield High School, for first on vault with a 9.725. Dockendorf also took first on bars with a 9.900, while Bakken scored a 9.775 on floor to claim top honors. The two event titles were the first of Bakken's career, while Dockendorf ran her career total to 45.
The difference in the meet was the vault, where the Huskies outscored Cal 48.175-47.525. The Bears counted two low scores on vault towards their total, while the Huskies remained consistent. The Huskies were forced to count two falls on bars and beam, but were fortunate that Cal also had to count two falls on beam, keeping the team totals close.
The Bears used only seven gymnasts during the evening and had four of them competing in the all-around. The Huskies had no gymnasts compete in the all-around. Dodd walked away with the all-around title after scoring a 39.000.
The Huskies return to the mat on Friday, March 4 in the Shanico Invite hosted by Oregon State in Corvallis, Oregon.
