Baseball Wins Fifth Straight

Feb. 20, 2005

San Diego - The Oregon State University baseball team scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning and defeated the University of San Diego Toreros 3-2 in a non-league baseball game Sunday at Cunningham Stadium. The win was the Beavers (6-1) fifth straight.

The victory came in dramatic fashion as the final out occurred at home plate when left-fielder Chris Campos, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the top of the final inning and played leftfield in the bottom half, threw out Shane Buschini at home plate after a two-out single by Matt Weston. Weston's hit did score pinch-runner Reginald Foy.

The Beaver pitching trio of Jonah Nickerson, Kevin Gunderson and Nate Fogle limited the Torero offense to just seven hits. Nickerson pitched six innings, allowing four hits and striking out three, but did not earn the victory. Gunderson moved his record to 2-0 allowing two runs (1 unearned) in two innings and striking out four. Fogle earned his first save of the season.

'I was impressed with our pitching today, all three did a good job,' Beaver head coach Pat Casey said. 'Nickerson pitched exceptionally well.'

The Beaver heroics in the ninth came with two outs. Third baseman Shea McFeely singled with one out and was standing on third with two outs when second baseman Chris Kunda doubled to centerfield. Campos then came to the plate and was hit by USD starter Justin Blaine, which was followed by Blaine loading the bases by issuing a base on balls to Jacoby Ellsbury. USD relief pitcher Matthew Falk entered the game and walked Mike Lissman for what proved to be the winning run.

'We didn't exactly light it up offensively, but we got some timely hits when we had to have them,' Casey added. 'The Toreros are a good team and they made some defensive plays today as well that kept us from scoring more runs.'

The Beaver offense was led by the 2-for-4 efforts by McFeely and Kunda. Kunda added two runs and a run batted in. Ellsbury and Lissman also added an RBI each. Ellsbury had a one out run-scoring single in the third inning.

The Beavers and Toreros (8-7-1) return the diamond Monday at 2 p.m. to complete the three-game tournament. Sophomore Dallas Buck takes a 1-0 record to the mound for the Beavers.
