Feb. 20, 2005

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The No. 1 California softball team (5-0) pounded Michigan State, 13-0, and slid past host UNLV, 2-1, on Sunday to complete a four-game weekend sweep at the UNLV Invitational at Eller Media Stadium.

In the opener, Cal collected 13 hits and posted a seven-run second inning to down Michigan State (1-2). Junior catcher Haley Woods, who swatted four homers and had 17 RBIs at last year's UNLV Invitational, hit a three-run homer and had five RBIs against the Spartans. Cal starter Kristina Thorson (2-0) yielded two hits over five innings.

In the nightcap, the Bears took advantage of a bases loaded walk to Alex Sutton that scored Jessica Pamanian and a single from third baseman Vicky Galindo to plate Julie Meyer in outlasting UNLV (7-5). Starter Kelly Anderson (2-0) struck out six and limited the Rebels to two hits.

The Bears defeated Southern Illinois, 1-0, in six innings on Feb. 18 to open the tournament and beat Iowa State, 5-0, Feb. 19.

Cal returns to action Wed., Feb. 23 when they host Santa Clara at Levine-Fricke Field. The doubleheader gets underway at noon.
