UCLA Women Drop 81-68 Contest To No. 4 Stanford

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Despite 24 points from UCLA junior guard Nikki Blue, No. 4 Stanford defeated UCLA 81-68 on Sunday in front of 2,175 in Pauley Pavilion. Candice Wiggins had 24 points and a career-high 16rebounds, and Brooke Smith added 20 points for the Cardinal.

After starting sluggishly, Stanford (24-2, 15-1 Pac-10) took control of thegame in the final minutes of the first half. The Cardinal, which has nevertrailed at halftime this season, went on a 23-4 run to turn a 27-20 deficitinto a 43-31 halftime lead.

UCLA (16-10, 10-7) never got closer than nine in the second half. Smith andKristen Newlin each had seven points during the decisive first-half run, andSmith went into the locker room with 13 points.

Blue had 24 points and Lisa Willis added 15 for UCLA. Freshman forward Lindsey Pluimer had nine points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

The Bruins had problems inside when starting post players Pluimerand Amanda Livingston each picked up two early fouls. They played only 21minutes combined in the first half, and without them on the floor for much ofthe half, Wiggins was able to grab 10 first-half rebounds.

Stanford, which clinched the Pac-10 title on Friday and is trying toposition itself for one of the top seeds in the NCAA tournament, has now won 15consecutive games and 12 straight against the Bruins, dating to 2000.
