Women's Basketball Drops Home Finale To Arizona State, 66-56

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Three Oregon State players reached double figures in scoring, but Arizona State University came away with a 66-56 victory in Saturday night's Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action.

Oregon State (6-20; 1-15 Pac-10) jumped out to an early 6-2 lead and kept the game close for much of the first half, before Arizona State (18-8; 10-6 Pac-10) used a 6-0 run to end the frame and earn a 36-27 lead at the break.

Both teams struggled shooting from the field in the second half and OSU finished the game with a 37-percent clip, while the Sun Devils hit 45-percent from the floor.

Beaver seniors Shannon Howell and Jessica Mellinger closed out their careers in Corvallis with 10 and five points, respectively.

'I'm really proud of Jessica and Shannon,' said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra. 'I know it's not the season they wanted, but they kept a positive attitude throughout the year.'

Junior post Kim Butler led Oregon State with 15 points on 3-of-4 shooting and a perfect 9-for-9 mark from the free throw line. Anita Rivera added a season-best 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting.

Three Sun Devil players reached double figures in scoring with Amy Denson's 18 points leading the way.

The Beaavers held a 31-29 rebounding edge.

Oregon State returns to action on Thursday at University of California. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
