Cal In Third After First Round of Lady Puerto Rico Classic

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - California is in third place with a score of 306 after the opening round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic Monday at the Dorado Del Mar Country Club. No. 3 Auburn leads the 14-team field at 299, while TCU is second at 304.

Rounding out the top five teams is No. 16 Florida at 308 and No. 5 Georgia and No. 18 Wake Forest at 312. Host Purdue is in a three-way tie for seventh at 313.

Cal junior Sofie Andersson, an honorable mention All-American last season, leads the individual competition with an opening-round score of one-under 71. Auburn's Nicole Hage is one shot back at 72, and five golfers are tied for third with scores of 74.

Bears junior Sophia Sheridan, also an honorable mention All-American, had a strong start to the spring season by firing a round of 75 to tie for eighth. Sophomore Mika Takayama is tied for 38th with her teammate Jen Sanders at 80 after her first round with the Bears since competing as an amateur for the last year and a half in Japan. Senior Claire Dury is tied for 46th at 81.

The second of three rounds tees off tomorrow morning.
