Anastasia Kostina Finishes Second At Miccosukee Women's Championship

Feb. 22, 2005

MIAMI, Fla. - Junior Anastasia Kostina finished in second place at the Miccosukee Women's Golf Championship, Tuesday, firing a final round even-par 73 at the Miccosukee Country Club.

Kostina shot 224 (+5) over three rounds at the par-73 course, finishing only two strokes behind tournament champion Hannah Hoch of Colorado. Kostina has yet to finish lower than eighth place in six tournaments this season, placing her in a tie for third on WSU's all-time list for top 10 finishes in a season.

Senior two-time All-American Kim Welch joined Kostina in the top five, shooting 226 (+7) and tying for fifth place. Welch's final-round 2-under 71 was the second lowest score of the day.

Led by Kostina and Welch, the Cougars finished in second place as a team, eight strokes behind tournament champion Georgia State University. The Cougars went into the final round in fourth place, but moved into second with a final-round team score of 298, the second-lowest team score of the day.

'I was very excited we moved past Colorado,' said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams. 'It was also nice to beat the other cold weather schools.'

Senior Jay-Lee Longbottom recorded her 19th career top 25 finish, tying for 24th with a 235 (+16). Longbottom currently sits in fourth place on WSU's all-time list for career top 25 finishes.

Senior Maria Kostina shot 240 (+21), and redshirt sophomore Heather O'Leary shot 246 (+27) to round out the scoring for the Cougars.

'We got better with each round,' said Williams. 'It was worthwhile to get down here and swing without three layers on.'
