Beavers Finish 13th At Wildcat Invitational

Feb. 22, 2005

TUCSON, Ariz.- - Oregon State's women's golf team finished the final round of the Wildcat Invitational Tuesday afternoon with a thirteenth place finish at the Arizona National Golf Club. The Beavers compiled a three-round total of 954.

Leading Oregon State was junior Leah Whiting, who fired a 5-over 76 in the final round and finished tied for 35th with a 228, including a first-round even-par 71. Freshman Julie Uhrik posted the low round for the day with a 3-over 74.

'We shot much better today than in yesterday's afternoon round,' said head coach Risë Lakowske.

'I don't really know why it happened, but they all seemed to get into trouble at the same time.

'Today was much better. Julie had a 74, Leah had a good 76, and Alex played really well even though her score didn't count toward the team total.'

After bringing a five-stroke lead into the final round, UCLA held off Arizona by one stroke to secure the wire-to-wire victory. The Bruins finished with a team total of 864.

ASU's Louise Stahle also never trailed and was able to earn a one-stroke victory over UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas with a 4-under 209.

Five strokes behind Whiting was sophomore Jill Ferrante with a 233, placing her tied for 44th.

Freshman Jessi Gebhardt finished with a 253, senior Kelly Kerkvliet posted a 256, and senior Alex Lucio did not record a total score due to a disqualified first round. Lucio fired a 4-over 75 in the final round.

'They're a young team, especially with three freshmen, but we'll just keep on working at it,' added Lakowske.

Next up for the Beavers is the Texas A&M Invitational, Feb. 28-Mar. 1 at The Traditions Club in Bryan, Tex.
