Women of Troy Tennis Hosts San Diego State, Travel To Bay Area To Face Cal And Top-Ranked Stanford

THIS WEEK -- The 12th-ranked USC women's tennis team (4-0), coming off a 7-0 victory over San Diego last week, hosts No. 69 San Diego State (3-2) on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Stadium, then heads to the Bay Area to take on No. 17 California (4-1) on Friday, Feb. 25, at 1:30 p.m. in Berkeley, Calif. and top-ranked Stanford (7-0) on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. in Stanford, Calif., in a pair of non-conference meetings between the Pac-10 foes.
The Women of Troy return five letterwinners and welcome four newcomers in 2005. The young team features no seniors and a starting lineup led by two freshmen, three sophomores and a junior. USC went 18-7 overall in 2004, finished second in the Pac-10 with a 7-1 record and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16.
ITA RANKING UPDATES -- The Women of Troy remain at No. 12 in the latest ITA rankings released on Feb. 22. The Trojans boast four ranked singles players, including No. 9 Nicole Leimbach (freshman), No. 17 Lindsey Nelson (freshman), No. 87 Dianne Matias (sophomore) and No. 88 Anca Anastasiu (sophomore).
USC VS. SAN DIEGO STATE -- Wednesday's match against San Diego State will mark the 37th meeting between these two teams. USC owns a 32-4 advantage in the all-time series, including a 7-0victory in Los Angeles in 2003, the last time they faced each other. The Women of Troy also have won 10 consecutive matches over the Aztecs, dating back to 1993.
USC VS. CALIFORNIA -- The match between USC and California will be the 48th in the series' history. The Trojans hold a slim 24-23 advantage over the Golden Bears, including last season's split. Last year, the Women of Troy lost to California, 5-2, in Berkeley but rebounded to defeat the Golden Bears, 5-2, in Los Angeles.
USC VS. STANFORD -- USc and Stanford have previously met 66 times in their history with the Cardinal leading the series 49-17. Last season, the Trojans were swept by Stanford, 6-1, in Palo Alto and, 7-0, in Los Angeles.
RECENT RESULTS -- The Trojans last took the court Feb. 16, blanking No. 51 San Diego, in San Diego, 7-0. The shutout was the third consecutive for the Women of Troy in the early four-match season.

HEAD COACH Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien is in his 10th season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. Last season he guided the 2004 Women of Troy to a 18-7 overall record, the NCAA Round of 16 and a No. 8 final national ranking. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last 12 years, he has compiled a 219-107 (.672) overall record and his teams have made nine appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including an appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals four out of the last six years.
