After a strong finish to the regular season, Oregon State will be trying to keep its momentum going when the Beavers compete in the Pacific-10 Championships on Sunday and Monday at Cal Poly.

The Beavers (12-8-1 overall, 7-2-1 Pacific-10) won their final three dual meets of the season, all against Pac-10 opponents, and in those meets OSU appeared to be a team that was getting things going at the right time of the season.

'I feel good about how they've handled the adversity we've dealt with this whole year,' said OSU head coach Joe Wells, who has shuffled his lineup due to injuries most of this winter. 'The guys have done a good job of staying focused. We're getting more aggressive and getting some bonus points the last few weeks as we approach the Pac-10s, and that's exactly how we need to wrestle if we're going to be a factor in the Pac-10 Championships.'

The Pacific-10 receives 40 automatic berths to the NCAA Championships. The Pac-10 coaches will decide on the number of automatic and wild-card entries during Saturday's seeding meeting, with a likely scenario being that the top three finishers at each weight class will advance along with 10 wild-card entries that will be selected by the coaches after the final session on Monday night.

In this week's final Pacific-10 rankings for the season, senior 165-pounder Matt Ellis and sophomore heavyweight Ty Watterson were both second in their weight classes; senior 141-pounder Tim Norman and junior 157-pounder Tony Hook were third in their weight classes; and sophomore 174-pounder Jeremy Larson was fourth in his weight class.

'We have a bunch of guys who could be in the hunt,' Wells said of Beavers with a shot and individual titles. 'Matt Ellis (the defending champ at 165) and Ty Watterson will probably be seeded second, Tony Hook and Tim Norman will probably be seeded third. Jeremy Larson will probably be seeded fourth, but he just beat the guy who is probably going to be seeded first.

'Right away, those five guys have an excellent shot. You have to get to the finals, first of all, but they have an excellent shot to get to the finals and then it's just a matter of doing the right thing once you're in the finals.'

OSU junior 184-pounder Dan Pitsch is also a returning NCAA qualifier and will make a run at a return trip to the national meet, and sophomore 133-pounder Bobby Pfennigs is also in the final Pac-10 rankings. Others who aren't seeded could also be a surprise.

'At certain weights we've got some inexperience and some youth,' Wells said. 'We've had a guy like (sophomore 125-pounder) Eric Stevenson who has beaten some of the best guys but is just starting to establish his consistency of the past few weeks. He wrestles consistent and gets after them, and even though he's not seeded, he's a guy they don't want to draw, especially in the first round.

'(Freshman 197-pounder) Travis Gardner has an outside shot, there's no question in my mind he can be in there. (Junior 149-pounder) Orlando Perez, even though he's not going to be seeded, could be in there if he wrestles well.'

As far as the team race goes, Wells sees Arizona State as the team to beat. The Sun Devils, ranked No. 19 in the nation this week, are the only Pac-10 team in the national coaches poll.

'Everybody has a couple of real good guys, then they've got some other guys who could emerge, but I think Arizona State is the favorite - but they've got to do things right,' Wells said. 'If we all do our piece, then there are about six teams that could conceivably win it. And that's good - that's the way it should be.

'We're excited about our chances and we're looking forward to getting down there and getting ready to go.'

OREGON STATE ALL-TIME AT PACIFIC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS: Oregon State has won 44 team titles in the Northwest, Pacific Coast, AAWU, Pacific-8 and Pacific-10 Championships since starting varsity wrestling in 1908-09, most recently in 1994. The Beavers have crowned 200 individual conference titles, the latest when Matt Ellis took the Pac-10 crown at 165 pounds in 2004.

In the 2004 Pacific-10 Championships at Arizona State, Ellis was the champion at 165 but the Beavers placed seventh as a team. OSU 174-pounder Jed Pennell and heavyweight Jamie Rakevich were beaten in overtime in the championship finals. OSU 149-pounder Tony Hook placed third and 184-pounder Dan Pitsch placed fourth. Ellis, Pennell, Rakevich and Hook all earned automatic berths to the NCAA Championships, while Pitsch earned one of the conference's wild-card entries to the national tournament.

OREGON STATE'S LATEST MEET: Oregon State got pins from 125-pounder Eric Stevenson, 157-pounder Tony Hook and 197-pounder Travis Gardner as the Beavers beat California-Davis 27-13 in Pacific-10 wrestling the night of Feb. 18 at Gill Coliseum. OSU's Jeremy Larson beat Ronnie Silva, ranked No. 1 in the Pac-10 at 174 pounds, to help the Beavers finish the dual meet season with 3 straight wins. Stevenson opened the meet by pinning Francisco Manriquez in 4:43, then the Aggies won three straight matches for a 10-6 lead. Hook jump-started the Beavers by pinning Bryan Bachar in 1:30, then nationally-ranked Matt Ellis added a 9-5 decision over Frank Richmond and Larson took his 11-5 decision over Silva. Gardner clinched the match when he quickly went from his own back to pinning Reed Shelger in 1:39. Beaver heavyweight Ty Watterson wrapped up the evening with a 9-4 decision over Flynn Ficker; Ficker's father, noted heckler Robin Ficker of National Basketball Association fame, was in vocal - yet tasteful - attendance at the meet.

OREGON STATE HEAD COACH Joe Wells: Joe Wells, who is in his 13th season as Oregon State's head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and 4 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships during his time at OSU.

The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State in 2001 was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 148-92-2 for a winning percentage of .616.

The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 4 times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.

Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 17 All-Americans and 22 conference champions.

Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.

Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and was the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OREGON STATE THIRD IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were third in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools going into the 2004-05 season. OSU currently has an all-time dual meet record of 882-284-25 and a .751 winning percentage.

OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Now in their 49th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 365-73-6 in the arena for a winning percentage of .829. This season, OSU was 4-3-1 at home. OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 14 times, including 2002, and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.
