Bruin Softball Travels to Palm Springs This Weekend
Feb. 23, 2005
After two weekends in which eight games were rained out, the Bruins hope to play all five scheduled games at this weekend's Palm Springs Classic. By the time the Bruins are scheduled to face Bethune-Cookman at the Big League Field of Dreams complex in Cathedral City, Calif., UCLA will have played just two games over the previous 18 calendar days. Long range forecasts show a precipitation-free weekend, which would be a welcome change from the recent soggy start to the 2005 season.
Bruins Shut Out Bulldogs, Remainder of Campbell/Cartier Rained Out
An impressive performance in the circle by freshman Anjelica Selden and solo home runs from Andrea Duran and Jodie Legaspi powered UCLA to its fourth win this season over No. 20/13 Georgia on Friday night. The remainder of UCLA's scheduled games at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament (vs. Utah, Notre Dame, Florida International and host San Diego State) were rained out. In addition to her solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning and give UCLA the lead for good, Duran also had a fourth-inning leadoff double to break up the no-hitter being thrown by Georgia's Michelle Green. Duran accounted for half of UCLA's hits in the game. All four were for extra bases and included the second double of the season for Kristen Dedmon.
Anjelica Selden Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week
UCLA freshman Anjelica Selden has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced on Tuesday. Selden pitched a one-hit shutout with 16 strikeouts on Feb. 18 against Georgia, UCLA's only contest of the Campbell/Cartier Softball Tournament that was not cancelled due to rain. Selden allowed just three baserunners on the day, two by errors and one on a bloop infield single.
Her 16 strikeouts in the game is the highest strikeout total for a Bruin pitcher in a single game since DeeDee Weiman struck out 16 in an NCAA Regional game on May 21, 1994. It is the fifth 16 strikeout performance in UCLA softball history dating back through the 1992 season. She struck out the side in the seventh inning and struck out 10 of the final 12 batters she faced in the game. Selden is now 5-0 on the season and has struck out 79 batters while walking just two through 40 innings in the circle.
