BEAR NOTES: The 2005 California baseball team, winners of five straight games on the road, face Saint Mary's in a three-game series, Feb. 25-27, hosting the Gaels Friday and Sunday at Evans Diamond. Cal is coming off a sweep of then-No. 20-ranked Long Beach State, winning 3-2 Feb. 18, and then capturing a doubleheader, 7-4 and 3-1 on Feb. 20. It was the Golden Bears' first series victory over the 49ers since 1999, and the first swept of Long Beach State since 1991. Junior right-hander Adam Gold defeated the 49ers for the second year in-a-row on Feb. 18, throwing 7.0 innings with five hits, no earned runs (two unearned), two walks and three strikeouts. Gold leads Cal with 16 strikeouts and only four walks in 18.7 innings. Freshman first baseman Mike Van Winden went 4-for-7 in the series, including the game-winning two-run double in the top of the ninth inning in the second game of the doubleheader. Senior left-hander Travis Talbott picked up two saves at Long Beach and now has a Pac-10-leading three saves. Talbott threw 2.0 innings with one hit, no runs, no walks and four strikeouts Feb. 18, and came back with 2.0 innings, two hits, one run, no walks and a strikeout in game one Feb. 20. He now has 10 strikeouts in 11.3 innings with a 0.79 ERA on the year. The entire Bear pitching staff performed well, combining for a 1.67 ERA in the Long Beach State series. Besides Gold and Talbott, senior right-hander Eric Dworkis excelled, throwing 7.0 innings with seven hits, one run, one walk and six strikeouts in the second game of the Feb. 20 doubleheader. Sophomore center fielder Brennan Boesch continued his hot hitting, going 4-for-10 with a double and RBI at LBS. Boesch leads the team with a .417 average (15-for-36) and a team-high 15 hits, eight runs, three doubles, a .639 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage.

SERIES RECORD: Cal has a 114-58 overall series record against the Saint Mary's Gaels. In the last meeting, the Bears won two of three games (W 9-2 at Cal, L 2-1 at SMC, W 11-5 at Cal) Mar. 5-7, 2004.

HEAD COACH David Esquer: Esquer, 39, is in his sixth season at Cal with a career record of 147-142 (.509). In 2001, he was the Pac-10 Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to a 34-25 mark, a third place finish in the Pac-10 (14-10) and a berth to the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge, LA (1-2). Twenty-five Cal players have signed professional contracts since Esquer became coach, including Conor Jackson, who was a first round draft choice of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2003. On June 10, 1999, Esquer became only the 10th coach in the history of Cal baseball, which began in 1892. He came to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant at Pepperdine from 1996-99. Esquer was the No. 2 assistant coach at Stanford under Mark Marquess from 1991-96. A shortstop at Stanford from 1984-87, he was a starter on the 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors. Esquer also earned All-Pac-10 Southern Division honors and went on to play professional baseball for four seasons with the Baltimore, California and Milwaukee organizations.

NOTING SAINT MARY'S: The Saint Mary's Gaels, coached by Jedd Soto (second year at SMC, 16-46), are 2-5, winning their last game, 8-1, at Sacramento Feb. 19. Top hitters for the Gaels are junior shortstop Cody Nelson (.429, 0 HR, 1 RBI), junior center fielder Sam Carter (.345, 2 HR, 11 RBI) and junior second baseman Bryan Byrne (.320, 0 HR, 3 RBI). In 2004, the Gaels finished 14-41 overall and 7-23 (fourth) in the West Coast Conference Coast Division.

BEARS STELLAR ON THE ROAD: The 2005 Bears have been impressive on the road this season, owning a 5-1 record away from Evans Diamond. Cal is on a five-game winning streak, capturing 2-of-3 games from a Loyola Marymount team that barely missed out on an NCAA bid last season, and sweeping a Long Beach State squad that eliminated Stanford, at the NCAA Regional at Sunken Diamond, from a sixth-straight College World Series appearance. The Bears were 12-16 on the road in 2004.

GOLD SHINES: Junior right-hander Adam Gold, an honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection last year, had another impressive outing versus Long Beach State, defeating the 49ers last Friday by pitching a season-high 7.0 innings with five hits, no earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts. Last season, Gold defeated then-No. 9-ranked Long Beach State behind a 7.3 inning, five hit, one run, two walk and seven strikeout effort at Evans Diamond. Two weeks later he was one out away from a no-hitter at Fresno State and was named the NCBWA National Co-Pitcher of the Week. Gold currently leads the Bears with 16 strikeouts (tied with Eric Dworkis) and is eighth in the Pac-10 in innings pitched (18.7 innings). He has improved in each of his outings in 2005, struggling Feb. 4 versus UC Irvine (5.7 innings, nine hits, seven runs, one walk, three strikeouts), but then throwing 6.0 innings with six hits, six runs, one walk and tying a career-high with 10 strikeouts at Loyola Marymount Feb. 12.

BOESCH HIGHLIGHTS: Sophomore center fielder Brennan Boesch is continuing to lead Cal in hitting, sporting a .417 average, going 15-for-36 with three doubles, a triple, a home run and four RBI on the year. Boesch had a RBI in the season-opener versus Pacific and was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and scored the winning run in the Bears' extra-inning victory over UC Irvine Feb. 5. At Loyola Marymount, he was 5-for-12 with a triple and RBI, and last weekend in Long Beach he was 4-for-10 with a RBI double. Boesch currently has a team-best .639 slugging percentage, a .500 on-base percentage and is 4-for-7 (.571) with runners in scoring position. He also has had three, three-hit games this season.

TALBOTT SAVE LEADER: Senior left-hander Travis Talbott has been one of the Pac-10's hottest pitchers of late, earning two saves last weekend at Long Beach State. Talbott now leads the conference with three saves and is third in the league in both opposing batting average (.154) and appearances (six). He is also sixth in the Pac-10 with a 0.79 ERA, giving up only one earned run in 11.3 innings. Another impressive state for Talbott is his 10 strikeouts and only three walks in 11.3 innings. He came into this season with only one career save.

ERRECART FEB. 15 PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sophomore right fielder Chris Errecart had the distinction of being named this season's first conference player of the week as he went 7-for-13 (.538) with a double, two home runs and six RBI as Cal won two-of-three games at Loyola Marymount Feb. 12-13. In game two of the LMU series, which was the first game of a doubleheader Feb. 13, Errecart was a perfect 3-for-3, including the game-winning three-run homer in the top of the ninth in the Bears' 8-5 win. Then in game three (second game of doubleheader), he was 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Cal's six-run fifth inning. Errecart finished the LMU weekend with 14 total bases (1.077 slugging percentage) and a .600 on-base percentage.

SATIN'S EXPLOITS: Freshman Josh Satin, who redshirted last year after injuring his right shoulder prior to the season, has made the most of his RBI opportunities in 2005. Satin had a big weekend at Loyola Marymount, going 6-for-15 (.400) with a double, two home runs and eight RBI. He had two home runs on Feb. 13, going 2-for-5 with a home run in game one, and then went 2-for-5 with a double, two-run homer and four RBI in game two. Satin is batting .268 (11-for-41) after going 0-for-9 at Long Beach State, but still has a team-leading 11 RBI, including the game-winning RBI in the 11th inning in the Bears' 5-4 victory over UC Irvine. He is hitting an impressive 8-for-15 (.533) with runners in scoring position.

CAL PITCHING NOTES: Senior right-hander Eric Dworkis had his best outing as a Bear Feb. 20 at Long Beach State, throwing a season-high 7.0 innings with one hit, one earned run, one walk and six strikeouts. Junior reliever Alex Trafton has pitched well in Cal's doubleheader victories at LMU Feb. 13 and LBS Feb. 20. Trafton notched the save at LMU, earned the win at LBS, and has not given up an earned run with five strikeouts with no walks in 4.0 innings.
