Local High School Field Named After Former Sun Devil Pitcher

TEMPE, Ariz.-- Tempe McClintock High School recently honored former Sun Devil pitcher Jim Merrick by naming its baseball field 'Jim Merrick Field.' Merrick is the former coach of the McClintock Chargers baseball team and is currently the pitching coach at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.
McClintock High School retired Merrick's number (19) and put up a bronze plaque on the press box. Merrick also threw out the first pitch in front of a large crowd attending the game against Prescott.
Merrick recorded a stellar career record of 18-3 from 1963-65 and was a member of ASU's first national championship team in 1975. His best year game in 1965 when he went 13-2 with 10 complete games and 111 strikeouts for a 2.16 ERA in his final season as a Sun Devil. Merrick finished his career at ASU with a career 2.43 ERA and an 18-3 record.
