Buck, Gunderson Combine on Five-Hitter

Feb. 25, 2005

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Dallas Buck and Kevin Gunderson combined to pitch a five-hitter as Oregon State beat California-Santa Barbara 4-2 in non-conference baseball Friday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. It was the sixth straight win for the Beavers (7-1 overall), who got three hits from Mitch Canham.

OSU meets the Gauchos (7-4) on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard on www.osubeavers.com

On Friday, Oregon State provided good defense behind Buck and Gunderson to top a UCSB team that has not lost a series this season. Centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, third baseman Shea McFeely, shortstop Darwin Barney, second baseman Chris Kunda, first baseman Canham and Buck all executed tough plays that helped the Beavers stay in front.

'Like we always say, if you pitch and play defense, then you have a chance to win,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Dallas was good and then we got a great outing from Gundy (Gunderson).'

Buck went seven innings, his longest outing of the season, to improve to 2-0 this spring; he struck out six and left the game after walking the first hitter of the eighth inning. Gunderson then got a double play on his first pitch and then sent down the next four hitters in order for his second save of the season.

'The play Shea made at third, turning the double play, got us out of a jam,' Casey said, recounting the Beavers' defensive keys. 'And the play Kunda and Buck combined on was a great play.

That came in the bottom of the seventh when Kunda dove left to snare a ball hit by Matt Aidem, then threw from his stomach to Buck covering the bag; the throw was low but Buck plucked it for the out. That came on the heels of Barney backhanding a ball in the hole and quickly getting off a throw that dropped well in front of Canham at first; Canham scooped it to retire Matt Kalafatis.

The defense went both ways, as UCSB righthanders Steve Morlock and Loren Fraser limited the Beavers to eight hits with some help behind them. OSU took a 2-0 lead when McFeely singled home two runs in the top of the second, but the Beavers were prevented from widening that margin when UCSB rightfielder Matt Wilkerson dove to rob Ellsbury of an extra-base hit down the rightfield line with runners at second and third.

'They really played defense,' Casey said of the Gauchos, particularly praising shortstop Chris Valaika. 'That's a very strong club, it's going to win a lot of baseball games. We feel very good about winning down here. It's tough to go on the road and win - we'll take one any time we can get one.'

OSU added its final two runs in the top of the fifth inning when Ellsbury led off with a triple and scored on Canham's groundout, then Lissman and Joey Ledesma hit back-to-back doubles. It was the sixth straight game in which Lissman has doubled, and he has 10 doubles this season.

Gunderson's save was the fifth of his career, tying him for sixth place on OSU's list of all-time leaders. Oregon State's six-game winning streak is its longest since it opened the 2004 season by winning its first seven games.
