Feb. 25, 2005
BERKELEY, CA - Senior designated hitter James Holder had a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning to lead Cal to a 5-4 victory over Saint Mary's Friday afternoon at Evans Diamond. Freshman Mike Van Winden led off the 12th with a single, and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Errecart. After Saint Mary's reliever Bryan Oland (0-1, 4.7 innings, six hits, three runs, one strikeout) was able to strikeout Brennan Boesch, Holder's hard-hit single to right gave the Golden Bears their six consecutive win. Cal improves to 7-4 on the season, while the Gaels fall to 2-6.
The winning pitcher for Cal was senior left-hander Travis Talbott, who pitched the final 2.7 innings with no hits, no runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Talbott had made a key defensive play in the 10th inning, with runners on first and second, when he had a diving catch of a bunt to force a double play. Junior reliever Alex Trafton also threw well for the Bears, pitching 2.3 innings with three hits, no runs, one walk and three strikeouts.
Saint Mary's starter Kevin Trochez perform well despite not getting the win, throwing 7.0 innings with only three hits, no earned runs, three walks and three strikeouts.
Cal had to have some late game heroics to avoid the loss. The Gaels had a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth, but the Bears mustered a pair of runs to send the game into extra-innings. After Garrett Bussiere and Jason Corder started the ninth with back-to-back singles, they were advanced on a Matt Einspahr sacrifice bunt. Allen Craig was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Van Winden got Cal within one on a sacrifice fly to center, and Chris Errecart tied the contest with a hard-hit ball to second base.
Saint Mary's had scored the first run of the day on a RBI single by Sam Carter in the first inning off of Bear starter Adam Gold (5.0 innings, five hits, three runs, four walks, six strikeouts). Cal came back to score two runs in the third inning on a two-error on Gaels' first baseman Adam Thompson. Saint Mary's recaptured the lead when Bryan Byrne led off the fifth inning with a solo home run, and later Delaney Gallagher had a RBI single up the middle for the 4-2 advantage.
Holder (2-for-6, RBI) and Einspahr (2-for-4) had two hits apiece for the Bears, while Byrne, Gallagher and Mike Sansoe had two hits each for the Gaels.
