Cougars Fall To Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - Washington State's Kate Benz scored 18 points while Keisha Moore added 14 in the Cougars' 89-60 loss to the Arizona Wildcats in Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action Thursday at McKale Center.

Benz's point-effort was the third highest of the season for the sophomore from Portland, Ore. Benz, who scored 12 points in the first half, also recorded her 14th double-digit scoring game of the season.

In addition, Benz, who entered the game as the Pac-10 leader in rebounding, pulled down a team-high seven boards.

Moore's point total was her second double-digit scoring performance in the last three games. The junior from Riverside, Calif., also added six rebounds.

Arizona's Dee-Dee Wheeler led all scorers with 18 points while Shawntinice Polk and Natalie Jones added 17 each for the Wildcats.

After an early exchange of points, Benz hit a 3-pointer to put the Cougars up 7-4 at the 16:42 mark of the first half.

Arizona responded with five consecutive points but WSU regained the lead at 10-9 on a Jessica Perry trey with 14:34 remaining.

Sparked by a 3-pointer from Arnold, Arizona went on a 10-2 run to open a 19-12 advantage nearly eight minutes into the contest.

But WSU answered with a run of its own, 8-0 to be exact, to regain the lead at 20-19 with 9:40 left. The run featured five points from Adriane Ferguson, including a 3-pointer that gave the Cougars the advantage.

With the game tied at 24, Wheeler and Jones hit back-to-back treys to spark a 14-4 run to give the Wildcats a 40-28 lead with 3:16 remaining.

Arizona maintained its 12-point advantage at 44-32 with 1:06 remaining in the half. However, WSU closed the opening 20 minutes with four consecutive points to go into the locker room down 44-36.

Benz began the second half with a bucket to pull the Cougars within six but Arizona went on an 11-0 run to open a 55-38 lead just over three minutes into the final half. Arizona's lead did not fall below 12 points the rest of the way.

WSU closes the Pac-10 regular season at Arizona State, Saturday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. Pacific.
