Katie Arnold Wins 100 Backstroke at Pac-10 Swimming Championships

Sophomore Katie Arnold won the 100 Backstroke in a school record time of 53.22 at the Pac-10 Championships in Federal Way, WA. as the Bruins finished day three in 4th place (660 points). Arnold's time broke her own school record (old record 53.65) and was an NCAA 'A' qualifier. Stanford continues to lead with 1,060 points, followed by Arizona (825 pts.) and Cal (748 pts.).

Junior Kim Vandenberg placed third in the 100 Butterfly swimming 53.30, just missing her own school record (53.29). Vandenberg's time was also an 'A' qualifier for the upcoming NCAA Championships.

Also swimming in finals of the 100 Fly were junior Kendall Butler and sophomore Isabel Miesner. Butler placed 16th in the console final in a time of 56.79, while Miesner finished 17th in the bonus final (55.90).

In the 200 Freestyle console final, sophomore Katie Nelson placed 12th in a time of 1:49.42. Freshman Shannon Hackett, swimming in the bonus final, placed 21st in a time of 1:50.73.

Freshman Nicolette Teo placed fourth in the 100 Breaststroke in a time of 1:02.58. Earlier in the prelims, Teo swam an 'A' qualifier of 1:02.69. Juniors Eileen Seissen (1:04.02) and Shellene Catalano (1:04.47) placed 14th and 16th respectively in the console final, while sophomore Luisa Los-Santos, competing in the bonus final, finished 20th in a time of 1:04.67.

Seniors Lindsey Smart (57.92) and Tamara Bal (58.58), swimming in the bonus final of the 100 Backstroke, placed 20th and 23rd respectively.

In three-meter diving action, freshman Brittany Renfrow finished eighth with a score of 4:36.35, while junior Paige Thompson placed ninth (4:29.45). Junior Amanda Blong (4:09.95) and senior Janine Strack (397.35) placed 11th and 12th respectively, while freshman Heather Peng finished 25th in a score of 3:19.30.

The final day of the Pac-10 Championships continues on Saturday with preliminary heats of the 1650 Freestyle, 200 Backstroke, 100 Freestyle, 200 Breaststroke, 200 Butterfly and the platform diving competition in the morning, and finals of all events on Saturday evening.
