Men's Tennis Drops Match to Arizona, 5-2

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State University men's tennis team was in action Friday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center, playing host to their intrastate rival the University of Arizona. The Sun Devils fell to the Wildcats 5-2. ASU earned points on the No. 3 and No. 4 singles courts. With the loss the Sun Devils fall to 4-2, while the Wildcats improve to 6-4.

The Wildcats took the early lead over the Sun Devils in doubles action, winning two of the three matches to earn the first point. At No. 3 doubles, ASU's Christopher Biro and Nick Hegarty battled against Arizona's team of Caludio Christen and Tim Mullane, eventually losing the point, 8-5. The Wildcats secured the doubles point at No. 1 doubles as the Sun Devils tandem of Andy Colombo and Jonathan Kinsella were topped by Colin O'Grady and Roger Matalonga, 8-6. The No. 2 doubles duo for ASU, Clinton Letcher and Mike Beatty earned the victory for the Sun Devils as they overcame the team of Bruno Alcala and Daniel Andrus, 9-8(2).

In singles action the Sun Devils came out strong, winning two of the first three matches off the court but the Wildcats overpowered ASU, claiming the remaining three singles matches. On the No. 2 court Colombo was topped by Matalonga, 6-0, 6-1. Letcher followed up to earn the Sun Devils first point on the afternoon on court No. 4, taking down Andrus in two sets, 6-4, 6-3. Kinsella was in action on court No. 3, tying the score for ASU with a win over Paul Warkentin, 6-4, 6-3.

Arizona regained the lead over ASU with a victory on court No. 6 as the Sun Devils Mike Beatty was overcome by Christen in a hard-fought two set match, 7-6(4), 7-6(3). The match was then up to the remaining matches still in action on courts No.1 and No.5. The Wildcats decided the match in action on court No. 1 as O'Grady overcame the Sun Devils Biro in a second-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 7-6(8), to secure the win. Action on court No. 5 remained intense as Hegarty and Jason Labrosse went back and forth. Hegarty took the early lead winning the first set but was unable to hold on as Labrosse took the match, 4-6, 7-6(2), 10-7.

The Arizona State University men's tennis team is back in action Wednesday, March 9 at the Whiteman Tennis Center when they take on Memphis
