No. 1 California Defeats No. 3 Texas, Mississippi State

Feb. 25, 2005

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Texas starter Cat Osterman allowed one run on one hit Friday evening but it was all the No. 1 California softball team needed to defeat the ace lefthander and the No. 3 Longhorns, 1-0, on Day No. 1 of the Palm Springs Classic.

Earlier in the day, Cal (9-0) defeated Mississippi State, 9-4.

Osterman (3-1), who finished with 16 strikeouts, was perfect through four innings before senior centerfielder Kaleo Eldredge led off the fifth inning with a double to right field. Eldredge advanced to third on second baseman Jessica Pamanian's sacrifice bunt and scored on shortstop Chelsea Spencer's fielder's choice.

Texas' lone threat on the night came in the third inning as the Longhorns loaded the bases with no outs. Cal starter Kristina Thorson (4-0) induced a pop-up and struck out the next two Longhorns to get out of the jam. Thorson recorded seven strikeouts on the evening and scattered three hits.

In the opener, eight different Bears combined for 14 hits and Cal took advantage of a Mississippi State school-record five errors in the 9-4 victory. Spencer led the way with a 3-for-3 day at the plate while catcher Haley Woods continued her hot hitting with two hits and two RBIs.

Cal starter Kelly Anderson allowed eight hits and three runs but improved to 4-0 on the season. Thorson pitched two-thirds of an inning to earn the save.

The Bears return to action on Saturday against No. 16 Texas A&M (3 p.m.) and No. 5 Tennessee (8:30 p.m.)
