Puhakka Makes Pac-10 History, Wins 3-Meter Title

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Junior diver Joona Puhakka made Pac-10 history Thursday night defending his Pac-10 title in the 3-meter springboard event while the Arizona State swimming team is in sixth place after the second day of competition at the Pac-10 Championships held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. The Sun Devils scored 273.50 in the seven events contested through two days.

Puhakka won his second Pac-10 title in as many days, claiming the 3-meter springboard title with a score of 611.90. He made Pac-10 history becoming the first man to win the Pac-10 title in the 3-meter on three occasions and the first man to win three Pac-10 championships in the 1-meter and 3-meter events. He is the 2003 national champion in the 1-meter event and the 2004 national champion in the 3-meter.

The Sun Devil women swam into sixth-place after seven events, with senior All-American Ágnes Kovács leading the way finishing fifth overall in the 200 IM. She swam a season-best and NCAA qualifying time of 2:00.01. Senior All-American Florencia Szigeti, the reigning Pac-10 champion in the 200 freestyle, claimed eighth-place in the 50 freestyle with a NCAA consideration time of 23.15. The 200 freestyle relay team of Szigeti, Caitlin Andrew, Laura Ullrich and Heidi Schmidt touched the wall third in a NCAA consideration time of 1:31.74. Freshman Sarah A Fischer led the Sun Devils in the 500 freestyle, swimming a time of 4:54.68.

In the diving pool for the women, senior Trisha Tumlinson, the reigning Pac-10 champion in the 3-meter and platform events, led the Sun Devils with a sixth-place finish in the 1-meter springboard event scoring 276.60.

The four-day short-course yards meet and diving action continues Friday-Saturday.
