Feb. 26, 2005
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.-- The 12th-ranked Huskies (8-5) used eight hits, including three home runs to defeat Ohio State (4-4), 9-2 this afternoon at the Palm Springs Classic. Aimee Minor had two home runs and four RBIs in the game, while Sarah Hyatt had one home run and drove in five runs for UW.
Washington grabbed the early lead in the second frame when Hyatt took the first pitch of the inning over the left field fence. Minor followed, working a full-count before blasting a home run to center field to give the Huskies the 2-0 lead.
The Buckeyes got on board in the third frame with one run. Nycole Koyano walked and moved all the way to third when the Huskies botched a throw to second base on a fielder's choice. With runners on first and third, Karisa Evans stole second and drew the throw allowing Koyano to score.
Washington scored two insurance runs in the fifth on two hits. Ashley Charters reached base on a bunt single and stole second base. Dominique Lastrapes hit into a fielder's choice and took second base on an errant throw to third. Ohio State intentionally walked Kristen Rivera to load the bases and Hyatt laced a single into centerfield to score two.
OSU answered with a run in the top of the sixth inning on two hits. Christina Douglas led off with a double and Brittany Vanderink followed with a hit that ricocheted off pitcher Ashley Boek. A weak ground out to the right side of the infield scored Douglas and cut Washington's lead to 4-2.
The Huskies roared back in the bottom half of the frame, scoring five runs on two outs. UW loaded the bases with a Charters single and walks to Lastrapes and Rivera. Hyatt followed with a line drive into center field to score two. Minor then blasted a three-run home run to centerfield to give Washington the 9-2 lead and eventual victory.
Boek (6-2) earned the win as she held Ohio State to four hits and struck out five. OSU's Chelsea Baker (2-1) took the loss as she gave up five hits and four runs over five innings.
The Huskies continue tournament action tonight when they face Kansas at 6 p.m.
