Beavers Take Seventh Straight In Baseball

Feb. 26, 2005

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Jacoby Ellsbury's seventh-inning home run gave Oregon State the lead for good as the Beavers beat California-Santa Barbara 6-4 in non-conference baseball Saturday afternoon at Caeser Uyesaka Stadium. Ellsbury finished 3-for-4 with the homer, a triple, two runs batted in and a stolen base as OSU (8-1 overall) won its seventh straight game.

The Beavers and Gauchos (7-5) conclude their series on Sunday at 12 noon; the game has been moved up one hour to accommodate OSU's travel plans. The game can be heard on www.osubeavers.com.

On Saturday, each time that UCSB scored, Oregon State responded with at least a run in the next half-inning. And each time OSU put a run on the board, the Beavers blanked the Gauchos in the next half-inning.

'Those are two pretty big things,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Whenever they took a lead or tied the game or cut into our lead, we came right back and got something done offensively. And whenever you score on a team, you want to shut them down the next time they come up.

'We were able to do both those things today against a very good ballclub, and that's an accomplishment. We've managed to win two good, tight games in the first two days down here, and now the challenge is to come out and play well on Sunday.'

Ellsbury, a preseason All-America pick who has a hit in every OSU game this season, had perhaps the biggest answer to UCSB. The Gauchos tied the game 4-4 on Matt Aidem's two-out, two-run single off reliever Jake McCormick in the bottom of the sixth inning; Ellsbury led off the top of the seventh with a line drive off UCSB righthander Brian Tracy that got just over the fence and stayed just inside the rightfield foul pole for his first homer of the season.

'When I first hit it, I didn't think I got it enough for it to go out,' said Ellsbury, who homered for the first time since April 4, 2004 against Arizona. 'Then I didn't think it was going to stay fair, either. I was just running hard and it went out - it was exciting, it was nice ... it was definitely easier to hit it over the fence.

That refers to Ellsbury's run-scoring triple to center in the second inning, which he tried to turn into an inside-the-park home run but was out at the plate. Andy Jenkins' towering homer to left-centerfield had driven in the Beavers' first two runs of the inning as Oregon State took a 3-1 lead.

UCSB got within 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth on Bill Rowe's solo homer off starter Anton Maxwell - just the fifth extra-base hit allowed by OSU pitching this season. The Beavers made it 4-2 in the top of the fifth when Ellsbury led off with a single, stole second and eventually scored on Mike Lissman's groundout.

Maxwell, who earned Pacific-10 Pitcher of the Week honors last week for taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning against California-Davis, worked into the sixth against UCSB. The sophomore lefthander allowed three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three, but also worked out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the bottom of the third.

After Aidem's two-run single tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, Kevin Joslyn came on to strike out Matt Emerick to end the inning with the score still knotted. Joslyn was relieved by Nate Fogle with one out in the seventh, and the junior righthander went the final 2 2/3 innings to earn his second save of the season.

'We're clicking right now,' Ellsbury said. 'We played a good team and our pitching is doing awesome. Kevin Joslyn did exactly what we needed and got a couple outs, Nate Fogle came in and did his job. The hitters got some key hits when we needed to and moved some runners over. It was a good win for us, now we just need to win Sunday.'

OSU tacked on one more run in the top of the eighth inning when Shea McFeely led off with a single through the left side, went to third on Jenkins' single through the left side and scored on pinch-hitter Chris Campos' groundout to second. McFeely and Joey Ledesma were both 3-for-5 on the day, while Jenkins was 2-for-4.

Oregon State's seven-game winning streak is its longest since OSU began the 2004 season with seven straight wins. The loss means that UCSB will lose a series for the first time this season after taking three-game sets from Pepperdine, San Jose State and Fresno State.

The Beavers' Darwin Barney had his eight-game hitting streak come to an end, and Lissman's run of doubles came to a close at six straight games but he did extend his hitting streak to seven games. Saturday's game was OSU's first win this season in which Lissman did not double.
