SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The tournament seedings and brackets for the 2005 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships were released Friday evening with eight of the 10 representatives of the Arizona State University wrestling team earning a place among the Top 6 in their respective weight classes. The championships, which are being hosted by Cal Poly, will run Sunday and Monday inside Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Cain Velasquez (Jr., Yuma, Ariz.) leads the way for the Sun Devils as the No. 1 seed in the heavyweight division while a quartet of wrestlers each earned the No. 2 spot in their weights. Those four Sun Devils include Patrick Williams (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) at 149, Brian Stith (So., Hampton, Va.) at 157, C.B. Dollaway (Jr., Mt. Gilead, Ohio) at 184 and Ryan Bader (Jr., Reno, Nev.) at 197. Rounding out the seeded Sun Devils are No. 4 Jeremy Mendoza (Jr., Temecula, Calif.) at 125, No. 6 Patrick Pitsch (Fr., Spanaway, Wash.) at 165 and No. 6 Rick Renzi (Fr., Flagstaff, Ariz.) at 174.

When the tournament opens, Velasquez will compete first for ASU as he faces Stanford's Shawn Ritzenthaler, who Velasquez defeated in a 25-8 technical fall victory on Feb. 5. At the conclusion of the pigtail round, the quarterfinals will get underway with the following bouts for ASU wrestlers:

At 125, Mendoza will face No. 5 seeded and defending Pac-10 champion Jesse Miramontes of CS Fullerton. Both John Espinoza (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) at 133 and Curtis Ray (So., Mesa, Ariz.) at 141 will have tough tasks ahead of them as they both will face the top-seeded wrestler in their bracket. Espinoza will meet Matt Sanchez of CS Bakersfield while Ray will battle CSF's Juan Mora.

Williams, a finalist a year ago, will open the tournament by facing the winner of a pigtail bout between Oregon State's Orlando Perez and Portland State's Eddie Dahlen. At 157, Stith will look to capture his first Pac-10 championships victory as he faces T.J. Ferguson of CPU, an opponent he defeated 21-6 (tech fall) last weekend in Tempe. A pair of No. 3 vs. No. 6 battles will follow at 165 and 174 as Pitsch meets Christian Arellano of CSUB while Renzi will meet Imad Kharbush of Stanford.

In the heavier weights, Dollaway will open his first Pac-10 tournament as he faces the winner of the Jesse Taylor (CSUF) vs. Jason Cates (BSU) in the quarterfinals of the 184 weight class while Bader opens the defense of his two Pac-10 titles at 197 with a quarterfinal bout against the winner of the Reed Shelger (UC Davis) vs. Jake Schneider (PSU) pigtail.

The pigtails of both the championship and consolation rounds, along with the quarterfinals of the championship round, will be contested in the first session of the day Sunday starting at 11 a.m. PST. The evening session, which starts at 6 p.m. PST will feature the championship quarterfinals, as well as the first round and quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.
