Huskies Drop Two In Desert

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.-- The 12th-ranked Washington softball team (7-5) dropped a pair of games today to open the Palm Springs Classic. The Huskies lost to Northwestern 3-2 in the opener before falling to No. 16 Texas A&M 10-0 in five innings. Washington had not lost two games in a row since doing so at the 2004 College World Series.

Washington tallied just two hits against Northwestern and had three errors against TAM en route to the losses.


Washington jumped out to the quick 1-0 lead in the first inning with Kristen Rivera's sixth home run of the season.

NU recorded its first hit in the fourth inning with a flare single down the left field line. The next batter reached on an error and Jamie Dotson homered to give the Wildcats the 3-1 lead.

The Huskies scored a run in the fifth when Ashley Charters walked and scored on a Dominique Lastrapes ground out to cut the lead to 3-2 but would get no closer.

Washington walked nine times in the game but stranded eight base runners.

Northwestern's Eileen Canney (5-2) picked up the victory behind an eight strikeout performance. Courtney Foster recorded the save.

Ashley Boek (5-2) took the loss, giving up four hits and striking out seven.

The Aggies scored a run in the first inning on one hit. Sharonda McDonald singled through the right side and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Jana James walked and drew a throw to second on a steal. McDonald scored on the play to put TAM on top 1-0.

Freshman pitcher Caitlin Noble sat the first two batters down in order to lead off the second inning but the next 10 batters reached base to score six runs. The Aggies pulled off the two-out rally on four hits, two errors and four walks.

Noble (2-3) took the loss as she allowed five hits and seven runs while striking out four over 2.2 innings. Boek pitched 1.1 innings of relief giving up two hits and three runs while striking out four. Noble and Boek combined for 10 walks.

Washington had four hits in the game including a pair of singles by Charters.

The Huskies return to action Saturday with two games. Washington faces Ohio State at 10 am and Kansas at 6 pm.
