Morris Knocks In Winning Run In 5-4 Victory Over UAB

Stanford, Calif. - Junior Catalina Morris knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth as the fourth-ranked Stanford softball team recorded a 5-4 win over Alabama-Birmingham tonight at the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal improve to 15-1 overall while the Blazers drop to 8-10 on the year.

Stanford got on the board in the bottom of the third when Lauren Lappin singled home Lindsay Key, who had reached base on a walk.

The Cardinal picked up three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Key led off the inning with a walk, followed by a single by Jackie Rinehart. Lappin recorded her second hit of the game to score Key. Michelle Smith doubled to leftfield to score Rinehart and Lappin to make the score 4-2.

UAB tied it up at 4-all with two runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Stanford took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Catalina Morris doubled down the rightfield to score pinch runner Heather Shook.

Lauren Lappin went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Michelle Smith had a 1-for-2 day at the plate with two RBI while Jackie Rinehart went 1-for-3.

Lauren Nydam picked up the win for Stanford, pitching 3.0 innings of relief with two strikeouts. Amanda Antonovich took the loss for the Blazers, allowing four runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work.

Stanford closes out tournament play tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Sacramento State.
