Final Stats

Honolulu, Hawai'i - Junior Jay Miller went 3-for-4 with two doubles and drove home the lone Cougar run as the Washington State baseball team fell 6-1 to the University of Hawai'i Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu. WSU is now 1-1 in the four-game series.

Starter Jayson Miller (0-2) earned the loss for WSU (6-6) after pitching five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. Senior Dane Renkert stepped in to pitch for the Cougars in the sixth inning but surrendered three runs on four hits in three innings of work.

Stephen Bryant (2-0), the reigning Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, earned the win for Hawai'i (6-4) after striking out seven Cougars, allowing six hits and one run in six innings on the mound. Steven Wright earned his first save of the season for the Rainbows pitching three innings of perfect ball.

'We just couldn't get anything going offensively,' said WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut. 'Bryant pitched a good ball game. We had him on the ropes early but couldn't break through.'

The Cougars posted their lone run of the game in the top of the first inning following a single up the middle by Jay Miller to score Kaeo Rubin.

'Rubin led off and scored, usually that means good things happen,' added Marbut. 'But that was the end of the scoring for us.'

Hawai'i then took the lead in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on a pair of singles and a pair of doubles. Joseph Spiers led off the inning with a single and was brought home on a single by Matthew Inouye. With two outs, Isaac Omura doubled to score Luis Avila, who had reached base on a double to center.

The `Bows added another run in the fourth inning following an RBI bunt single by Robbie Wilder to score Omura.

Hawai'i posted its final three runs of the game in the eighth inning when, with the bases loaded, Jose Castaneda hit a bases clearing triple to score Avila, Omura and Schafer Magana.

WSU's Travis Webb (0-1) will start the third game of the four-game series against Hawai'i Saturday at 8:30 PST.
