Cal Baseball Shutsout Saint Mary's, 7-0

BERKELEY, CA - The California baseball team completed a sweep and won its eighth straight game, shutting out Saint Mary's, 7-0, Sunday at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears received a strong pitching performance from sophomore reliever Michael Cooper, who threw 5.0 innings with three hits, no runs, one walk and five strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.

At the plate, Cal was paced by sophomore center fielder Brennan Boesch and freshman first baseman Mike Van Winden. Boesch was 2-for-4 with a home run in the fourth inning, and Van Winden was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI. The Bears improve to 9-4 on the season, while the Gaels fall to 2-8.

Cal defeated Saint Mary's 5-4 in 12 innings Friday and 5-1 Saturday in Moraga. The Bears' eight-game winning streak is the team's longest winning streak since Cal won nine straight games from Mar. 6-18, 1998.

The losing pitcher for the Gaels was starter Jordan Simo, who fell to 0-2 (6.0 innings, 10 hits, five runs, no walks, two strikeouts). Besides Boesch and Van Winden, sophomore Chris Errecart, junior Jeremy Burchett and senior Matt Einspahr also hit well for the Bears. Errecart was 2-for-5 with a RBI single in the sixth, Burchett was 2-for-3 with two doubles and threw a runner out at the plate from right field in the sixth inning, and Einspahr was 2-for-2.

Four Cal pitchers (Matt Swanson, Cooper, Joe Todoroff, Jason Corder) limited the Gaels to four hits.

The Bears will next host San Francisco, Tuesday, Mar. 1 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Cal will then travel to No. 13-ranked Stanford for a non-conference, beginning Friday, Mar. 4 at 5 p.m. at Sunken Diamond.
