Feb. 27, 2005
HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Starting pitcher Wayne Daman Jr. led the Washington State baseball team to a 7-1 victory over the University of Hawai'i in the final game of a four-game non-conference series Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium. WSU and Hawai'i spilt the series, each winning two games.
Daman (2-0) earned the win for the Cougars (7-7), allowing only one earned run on three hits in eight innings on the mound. Daman is now posting a 1.23 ERA in 22 innings of work this season.
'Daman had another big outing for us today,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'Only allowing one earned run and three hits in eight innings is an outstanding performance.'
Justin Costi (0-2) took the loss for the Rainbows (7-5) after allowing four runs and six hits in 3.1 innings. Only one of the runs was earned.
The Cougars scored an early run in the first when Jason Freeman trotted home on a ground out by Brady Everett, but the lead wouldn't remain for long. The `Bows' tied the game and score their only run of the game in their half of the inning when Joe Spiers scored on a single by Luis Avila.
In the ninth Zach Franklin singled home Jay Miller, who walked with one out. Later in the inning, Alexander ripped a double to right center, which scored two runners, pinch runner Garrett Kimbrel and McAngus.
'Our offense got a huge lift from Alexander,' Marbut added. 'He had his first start of the season and did a great job going 2-for-4, a run scored and two RBI.'
The Cougars will resume action Thursday, March 3 at 10 a.m. against Gonzaga in the Banana Belt Tournament at Harris Field, Lewiston. WSU is the defending champion of the tournament.
