FEDERAL WAY - Dana Kirk and the Stanford Cardinal left the King County Aquatics Center last night Pac-10 champions once again.

Kirk, from Bremerton, narrowly won the 200 yard butterfly, as she and the rest of the Cardinal were crowned team champions at the Pac-10 women's swimming championships.

Kirk held off a challenge from UCLA's Kim Vandenberg in the final 25 yards to win in 1 minute, 54.89 seconds, just a tenth of a second ahead of the onrushing Vandenberg. Kirk was edged out earlier in the meet in the 100 fly, where she was defending champion, but she wasn't denied this time around.

'It was like the universe giving me one back,' Kirk said afterwards. 'I messed up my finish in the 100 fly. I had the perfect finish here.'

Stanford easily won the team title, racking up 1499 points. It was the third title in four years for the Cardinal, and their 16th since 1987. Arizona was second with 1237 points.

'There's nothing that gets old about winning,' quipped Stanford coach Richard Quick.

Stanford's Caroline Bruce won her third title of the Pac-10 meet, adding the 200 breaststroke championship. Bruce defeated Arizona State's Agnes Kovacs, finishing in 2:09.76. Kovacs, a 2000 Olympic gold medalist for Hungary, finished in 2:11.91. Bruce had already both individual medley titles.

Lacey Boutwell of Stanford picked up her second championship of the meet with a win in the 100 freestyle. Boutwell, who won the 50 freestyle earlier in the week, finished in 48.55 seconds. Emily Silver of California was second in 49.51. Silver, from Bainbridge Island, was the 200 freestyle champion earlier in the meet.

Jo Fargus of USC won the 200 backstroke, coming back from fourth place to take the title in 1:55.87. Defending champion Jessica Hayes of Arizona was second in 1:56.01.

In the grueling 1650 freestyle, USC's Kalyn Keller set a quick pace in timed finals as she finished in 16:12.80 in her heat to defend her league title in the event. Stanford's Lauren Costella and Desiree Stahley came in second and third behind Keller. Arizona won the final swimming event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay, in 3:18.01.

Trisha Tumlinson of Arizona State won the women's platform diving event, scoring 443.25 points. The final for the men's platform diving was also contested, as Ray Vincent of USC narrowly edged Louie Gagnet of California for the title. Vincent scored 502.45 points to Gagnet's 499.15.
