No. 4 Stanford Defeats Sacramento State 6-1

Stanford, Calif. - Freshman Michelle Smith went 2-for-3 with a run scored as the fourth-ranked Stanford softball team defeated Sacramento State, 6-1, this afternoon, at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium to win the Stanford Invitational with a perfect 5-0 record. Overall the Cardinal improve to 16-1 on the year while the Hornets drop to 9-6.
In the bottom of the first inning, Catalina Morris led off with a double to right centerfield. A groundout moved her to third and a sacrifice fly by Lauren Lappin brought her home. A single by Michelle Smith was followed by walks of Leah Nelson and Meghan Sickler to load the bases. Tricia Aggabao and Becky McCullough drew walks to score Lappin and Smith. Elizabeth Bendig then singled to centerfield, scoring Sickler and Aggabao to make it 5-0 in favor of the Cardinal.
Stanford scored one more in the bottom of the second when Lauren Lappin, who had singled earlier, came home on an error by the shortstop.
Sacramento State scored their only run of the game in the top of the fourth.
Laura Severson (7-1) picked up the win for the Cardinal, allowing only one run on four hits over six innings of work. Jennifer Fryou took the loss for Sac State, giving up six runs on eight his over six innings.
