Cardinal Prepare For Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championships

WHAT: Pacific-10 Conference Men's Swimming Championships

WHERE: Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool, Long Beach, Calif.

WHO: Men's swimming teams from ARIZONA, ARIZONA STATE, CALIFORNIA, STANFORD, USC and WASHINGTON will compete for the 2005 Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championship.

WHEN: Wednesday through Saturday, March 2-5, 2005; Preliminaries begin at 11:00 a.m. and finals begin at 6 p.m. each evening.

TICKETS: Tickets for the 2005 Pacific-10 Conference Men's Swimming Championships are available only at the Championship site. An All-Session adult pass is $25, an All-Session student/senior citizen pass is $15. Single-day tickets are available at $10 for adults or $6 for a student/senior citizen.

MEET RESULTS: At the conclusion of each event, results will be faxed to the Pac-10 SID offices. Also, the results will be posted on the Pac-10 web site ( on the swimming page, as well as on Stanford's web site ( Please contact Noah Cohan at the Pacific-10 Conference office for more information.

Pac-10 Notes: The 2005 Pac-10 Championships feature some of the top teams in the country ... The latest CSCAA-Top 25 poll includes four Pac-10 teams ranked in the Top 10: No. 2 STANFORD, No. 4 CALIFORNIA, No. 8 ARIZONA, and No. 9 USC... Team results at last year's NCAA's found all six Pac-10 teams in the Top-25. Stanford placed second, followed by No. 4 Arizona, No. 7 California, No. 14 USC, No. 18 ARIZONA STATE AND No. 25 WASHINGTON.

School Notes: ARIZONA (5-4 Overall, 2-3 Pac-10) returns seven All-Americans from the team that took third at last year's Pac-10 Championships. ARIZONA STATE's (2-6, 0-4) season has been highlighted by the efforts of freshmen CJ Nuess and Lucas Azevedo. Nuess has ASU's season-best time in the 400 IM, while Azevedo has recorded NCAA qualifying times in the 500 and 1650 freestyle. CALIFORNIA (9-0, 4-0) finished the regular season undefeated, beating rival Stanford for the first time in 14 seasons. Senior Duje Draganja will look to defend his Pac-10 titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle in Long Beach. STANFORD (6-1, 3-1) has won the Pac-10 Swimming title in each of the last 23 seasons. The Cardinal took home last year's Pac-10 Championship by scoring a meet-record 866.5 points. They went on to finish as the NCAA Runner-up for 2004. USC (4-3, 2-2) junior Ous Mellouli took home individual titles in the 400 IM, 500 free and 1650 free at the 2004 Pac-10 Championships. He finished second in both the 400 IM and 1500 free at the 2004 NCAA Championships. WASHINGTON (8-5, 0-1) has been sparked by the swimming of freshman Bruno Barbic, who has recorded NCAA provisional times and school-records in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. He has recorded six victories in each of the two events so far this season.
