Gentry Advances at Pac-10 Tournament

Feb. 27, 2005

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Senior Matt Gentry advanced to the finals in the 157 pound weight class of the Pac-10 Tournament. He won two matches on the day in his defense of last year's title. Imad Kharbush lost in a 2-1 overtime match against Leonel Sanchez of Cal State Fullerton, but will continue wrestling tomorrow in the consolation bracket. Senior Nathan Peterson and junior Ryan Hagen also remain in the hunt for a top-three finish, which would give them an automatic trip to the NCAA tournament.

Gentry won both of his matches comfortably. In the first session he defeated Jesse Padilla of UC Davis by technical fall, winning the match 19-1. He won by major decision in the quarterfinals, defeating Cal Sate Bakersfield's Brian Busby 15-7. These decisions were exact reflections of this season's dual competition, in which he defeated the same wrestlers with the same results.

Tomorrow defending national champion takes on Brian Stith of Arizona State. Earlier this month Gentry defeated Stith 4-1 in a home dual. Gentry also won a 2-1 match between the two wrestlers at the Tournament of Champions and a 6-3 decision at the California Open.

Imad Kharbush advanced to the semifinals of the 174 pound bracket, but fell in overtime 2-1 to number two seed Leonel Sanchez. Kharbush faces Chet McBee of Oregon in the consolation bracket tomorrow.

Nathan Peterson (125) and Ryan Hagen (184) are the only two other Cardinal wrestlers who will continue to wrestle tomorrow. Peterson fell to Efren Ceballos 14-5 in his first match, but defeated Joey Lucas of Oregon 11-3 in the consolation bracket. His next match comes against Jeremy Mendoza of ASU. Mendoza defeated Peterson 6-0 in dual competition this season and 7-5 at the California Open.

Ryan Hagen lost his opening match and then won two matches in the consolation bracket to continue on to day two. After falling to Ryan Halsey 2-1, Hagen pinned Scott O'Rear of Cal State Bakersfield at 3:27. He then defeated Jesse Taylor of Cal State Fullerton and will be facing Dan Pitsch of Oregon State tomorrow. Hagen lost a 5-3 dual match to Pitsch in their only meeting this season.

Consolation semifinals will resume at 11:00 am tomorrow. The finals of each weight class will begin at 6:00 pm. Check back tomorrow to see results from the final day of the Pac-10 tournament.
