Two OSU Wrestlers Make Finals At Pac-10 Championships

Feb. 27, 2005

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.- - Wrestlers Matt Ellis and Jeremy Larson will represent Oregon State in their respective weight classes Monday night at Mott Gym in the finals of the Pac-10 Championships.

The Beavers were in fifth overall in the team standings after Sunday's first day of matches, less than four points behind fourth-place Cal Poly. Arizona State is in the lead with 88.0 points.

Five other Beavers could still take third overall in the pigstail bracket. They are Eric Stevenson (125), Tim Norman (141), Tony Hook (157), Dan Pitsch (184), and Ty Watterson (285).

'From the standpoint of getting guys into the finals, I'm disappointed,' said Oregon State head coach Joe Wells. 'We could have had as many as four or five guys in the finals. But you have to realize that this is a qualifier for nationals, and we still have a chance to get seven guys to nationals and that would be awesome.'

Ellis, seeded No. 2 at 165 pounds, improved his record this season to 13-3 on Sunday. He is set to wrestle top-seeded Joey Bracamonte of Oregon in the finals. Bracamonte beat Ellis in the season's second Civil War dual meet 3-1.

Larson, seeded No. 4 at 174 pounds, has won six of his last eight matches after Sunday's rounds. He will wrestle second-seeded Leonel Sanchez of Cal State Fullerton in the finals.

'Ellis and Larson each had great performances today,' added Wells. 'Larson looked pretty undefeatable, stayed on it, and beat the No. 1 seed. Matt has a rematch with the Oregon kid (Bracamonte) and he's a real good athlete.

'We need to get that top third spot. There are three weeks before nationals and we need to make some progress before then.'
