This Week In Pac-10 Men's Basketball
Feb. 28, 2005
Too many scenarios remain in order to determine the seeds for the Pac-10 Tournament (see page 6 of this release for the tie-breaker procedures)... WASHINGTON can assure itself of at least a tie for the Pac-10 title with a sweep of the Bay Area schools on the road, but that's something it hasn't done since 1985... ARIZONA visits ARIZONA STATE looking to grab at least a share of the league title as well... OREGON and OREGON STATE are on the road at USC and UCLA. The results in Los Angeles will not only determine Pac-10 Tournament seedings, but who gets into the Tournament as well.
TRE SIMMONS, WASHINGTON
U.S. BANK PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Simmons, a senior guard from Seattle, Wash., averaged 26.5 points on 18-of-33 (.545) shooting, including 11-of-17 (.647) from three-point range in sweeping the Arizona schools. In the 90-82 win over Arizona State, Simmons matched his career-high with 29 points, hitting 9-of-19 from the field, 6-of-7 from three-point range and a 5-of-6 from the free throw line. In the 93-85 win over No. 9 Arizona, Simmons scored 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-10 from three-point range and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe. He also averaged 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.5 steals.
With the sweep, Washington finished its home schedule with a 15-0 record - the first undefeated home mark since 1984.
It's the first weekly honor for Simmons, and Washington's 23rd honor all-time.

Sun., Feb. 27
UCLA 75, Notre Dame 65 (UCLA: Afflalo 17 pts, Thompson 16 pts/10 reb, Farmar 12 pts/7 asts)
ARIZONA senior C Channing Frye shot 24-of-28 (.857) and 8-of-8 (1.000) from the free throw line to average 28.0 points in the Wildcats' Washington road swing. He posted a career-high 30 points at Washington.... Frye has hit 21 of his last 23 free throw attempts... With Arizona's win over Washington State, coach Lute Olson tied former UCLA coach John Wooden with 304 victories in league play. Olson is 304-87 (.777) in 22 seasons of Pac-10 Play, while Wooden posted a record of 304-74 (.810) in 27 seasons of conference play... Arizona shot 52.9 percent (37-of-70) from the field in Saturday's game at Washington, marking the first time in 12 games this season that Arizona has shot 50 percent or better from the floor and lost... Junior F Hassan Adams tallied 19 points to go with nine boards, six assists and three steals at Washington. He did not commit a turnover in 37 minutes played. Through 29 games, Adams leads the team in steals (64), second in rebounding (5.9 rpg) and assists (84) and third in scoring (12.4 ppg).
ARIZONA STATE junior F Ike Diogu's national-best double figure scoring streak of 88 games still has a ways to go until it reaches Pac-10 and NCAA-record levels. The NCAA record is 115 set by La Salle's Lionel Simmons from 1987-90, while Sean Elliott of Arizona (1985-89) scored in double digits in the final 108 games of his career... Diogu leads the nation in free throws made (225) and attempted (283). His 648 career free throws made rank third all-time in the Pac-10. Only UCLA's Don MacLean (711 From 1988-92) and Stanford's Adam Keefe (652 from 1989-92) are ahead of Diogu. His 826 career free throw attempts also trail Keefe (886) and MacLean (827)... One more win will give ASU its sixth 19-win season in the past 22 seasons, while two more wins would mark 20 wins for just the fourth time in 20 years (second time under Rob Evans)... Senior G Jason Braxton will make his 100th career start for ASU on Saturday against Arizona. Only Eddie House (114), Ron Riley (109) and Alex Austin (100) have started 100 games in a Sun Devil uniform.
CALIFORNIA junior F Rod Benson had his double-digit scoring streak snapped at eight games when he scored nine points in Cal's loss at Oregon. He rebounded with an 18 point/7 rebound effort two nights later at Oregon State... Benson has reached double figures in 14 of 16 Pac-10 games this season... Over the past six games, junior C David Paris is shooting 26-of-39 (.667) from the field. Paris continues to lead all Pac-10 players in field goal percentage in Pac-10 games at 62.2 percent (56-of-90).
OREGON ... Sophomore G Aaron Brooks is shooting 109-of-130 (.838) from the free throw line for his career. That figure ranks as the fifth best career percentage in the Oregon record book... Oregon has held its opponents to 66 points or less in four of the last five games. In fact, the Ducks have held 15 opponents to 70 points or lower this season... Freshman F Malik Hairston is averaging 14.0 points over the past 12 games. He's posted a pair of double-doubles over the last three games... UO's freshmen are accounting for more than half of its' offense (36.2 ppg/51.4 percent) and 44 percent of its rebounds (15.3 rpg).
OREGON STATE junior F Nick DeWitz averaged 20.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in OSU's sweep over the Bay Area schools. He shot 14-of-23 (.609) from the field, including 7-of-10 (.700) from three-point range. In Saturday's win over California, DeWitz scored a career-high 28 points and made seven three-pointers to tie the school single-game record (held by Gary Payton and Josh Steinthal)... DeWitz has 44 blocked shots on the year, third in OSU single-season history... It was a historic weekend for the Beavers as they posted two wins to clinch their first overall winning record since 1989-90. In the process, OSU ended losing streaks of 11 games to Stanford and 14 games to California... Senior F David Lucas has scored 20 or more points in six of the last eight games... OSU completed the Pac-10 schedule with an 8-1 home record. That is the team's best home Pac-10 mark since going 9-0 in 1989-90... OSU's home attendance for the season was 7,065, the best mark since 1992-93.
STANFORD's junior F Dan Grunfeld (3.66 gpa/American Studies), junior G Chris Hernandez (3.20 gpa/Sociology) and senior F Nick Robinson (3.41 gpa/Political Science) were named to ESPN the Magazine's University Division All-Academic Team for District-8... Junior F Matt Haryasz has stepped up his offensive production with Grunfeld out of the lineup; he notched 15 points and nine rebounds in the Cardinal's narrow defeat at Oregon State before collecting 18 points and 10 rebounds in the win at Oregon, good for his eighth double-double of the season. Haryasz has recorded at least one double-double in each of the last six weeks, dating back to a 18-point, 10-rebound effort at USC on Jan. 22. Seven of his eight career double-doubles have been recorded during that stretch. Haryasz also has recorded three games with double digit scoring and nine rebounds in the last six-weeks, giving him double-digit scoring and at least nine rebounds in 10 of the last 11 games. Stanford is 8-3 in that time... Stanford had won 18 straight against Washington State before the Cougar's victory on New Year's Eve. The Cardinal have lost two of three against Washington, but prior to that Stanford had won 12 of 13 against the Huskies.
UCLA shored up its NCAA Tournament hopes with a 75-65 win at Big East NCAA hopeful Notre Dame. The Bruins held the Fighting Irish to 39.7 percent shooting for the game, including 32.1 percent in the first half. The Bruins started off the week with a 90-69 win over cross-town rival USC... Freshman G Arron Afflalo led the team in scoring in both contests, downing 7-of-8 shots against the Trojans for 22 points before hitting 4-of-5 at Notre Dame for 17 points. For the weekend, Afflalo was 11-of-13 (.846) from the field, 5-of-6 (.833) from three-point range, and 12-of-17 (.706) from the free throw line. He collected nine rebounds, two assists and a steal against USC, and four rebounds, three assists and three steals at Notre Dame. Afflalo's team-leading point totals marked the first time he has led or tied for the team lead in scoring since he did so against Western Illinois and UC Irvine on Nov. 23 and 27... Senior F Dijon Thompson recorded his seventh season and career double-double at ND, scoring 16 points and collecting 10 rebounds. The Bruins have won two of the last three against Oregon, but lost five in a row prior to that. Conversely, UCLA has lost two in a row versus Oregon State, but won 9-of-10 and 20-of-22 before the current streak.
Despite currently sitting in tenth place in the Pac-10 standings, USC still has hopes of making the eight-team field for the Pac-10 Tournament. Thursday's game with Oregon looms large for the Trojans' chances. A win keeps them in the hunt, a loss eliminates the Trojans from Tournament contention... USC F Jeff McMillan's offensive game has awakened; the senior has led or tied for the team lead in scoring in each of the last two games, the first times he has done so since Nov. 28 at North Carolina. Against UCLA, McMillan scored 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, collected eight rebounds, had one assist and a block. In the Trojans' previous game at California, an 89-70 USC victory, McMillan scored 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, with 10 rebounds and four assists. He is averaging 9.1 points and a team-leading 6.8 rebounds (6th, Pac-10) for the year... USC tries to snap a five-game losing streak against Oregon. The Trojans lost their earlier meeting with Oregon State in 2005, but won both meetings last season.
In his final game at Bank of America Arena, WASHINGTON senior G Will Conroy had four assists, giving him 166 for the season and surpassing the Washington single-season assist mark set by Chester Dorsey in 1976. Dorsey, who attended the game, may see his career mark fall as well - Conroy is just four assists shy of that record heading into this week's games. Conroy's 6.38 assists-per-game average for the season would also be a record if the season ended today - Dorsey holds the current mark at 5.8 apg... Junior G Nate Robinson made his presence felt all over the court last week, collecting 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting, four steals, three rebounds and three assists against ASU, followed by 22 points, seven assists and three rebounds versus Arizona... The Huskies' 22-game home winning streak is currently the fourth longest in the country, trailing only Oklahoma State (28 games), Gonzaga and Southern Illinois (24 games each). Their 16-game Pac-10 home winning streak is the longest in school history. At 15-0, the Huskies completed the 11th undefeated home mark in UW history and their first since 1984.
WASHINGTON STATE again worked its defensive magic in a weekend split with the Arizona schools. The Cougars fell in overtime to Arizona, 57-56, before beating Arizona State 57-55. The Wildcats were held to 49 points in regulation, their second lowest total of the season. Arizona was 6-of-18 (.333) from the field and scored just 19 points in the second half - the lowest total for a half posted by UA on the season. Against Arizona State, the Cougars again held their opponent to a season low 19 points in a half, this time through the first 20 minutes. ASU's 55 points scored for the game were also a season low, lowering the bar by nine points under the previous low tide (a 64-51 win at Oregon)... Senior G Thomas Kelati led the way offensively in both games, scoring 16 against Arizona and 15 versus ASU. Seven of his 11 field goals on the weekend were three pointers. He attempted 13 more threes (20) than twos (seven). With 1,018 career points, Kelati became the 25th WSU player all-time to reach 1,000 points.
