Bruins to Host Women of Troy This Friday . . .
Coming off its trip to the Bay Area, the No. 11-ranked UCLA women's tennis team (6-3) returns home this week to host No. 12 USC (6-1) on Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Bruins won the last meeting between the two teams, posting a 4-2 victory at the NCAA Championships in 2004. UCLA had lost to USC twice during the regular season prior to that meeting. USC leads the all-time series 38-33. The winner will gain 2.5 points in the race for the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy, the all-sport competition between USC and UCLA. In the Bay Area . . .
UCLA earned a split in Northern California last weekend, falling to top-ranked Stanford and defeating No. 17 Cal. Against the Cardinal on Friday, the Bruins became the first team to take the doubles point from Stanford this season, taking two of three matches. The Bruins, however, were unable to make a dent in singles play, losing all six matches in the 6-1 loss. UCLA was able to rebound a day later up in Berkeley, defeating the Golden Bears, 6-1 to earn its third-straight victory over Cal. After taking the doubles point, the Bruins won five of six singles matches.
New Team Rankings Released on Mar. 1 . . .
UCLA held the No. 11 spot in the ITA Team Rankings released on Mar. 1. The Bruins entered the season ranked No. 4, however fell to No. 11 after suffering two losses at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors. The latest individual rankings were released on Feb. 22 and freshman Riza Zalameda is highest ranked Bruin at No. 15 in the country. She is followed by No. 38 Daniela Bercek and No. 98 Elizabeth Lumpkin. In doubles, Bercek and Zalameda check in at No. 3, while Laura Gordon and Lumpkin entered the rankings for the first time at No. 42.
By the Numbers . . .
Freshman Riza Zalameda leads the team in singles victories with 18, owning an 18-6 overall record. Fellow freshman Elizabeth Lumpkin has the next highest total, as she is 15-7 in singles play. At 7-1, Lumpkin also has the best record on the team in dual matches. In doubles, Daniela Bercek and Zalameda lead the way with a 19-3 overall record, including a 4-1 mark at the No. 1 position. Sarah Gregg and Tracy Lin, the Bruins' No. 3 doubles team, are 9-2 overall and 8-1 in dual-match play.
Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her ninth season as head coach at UCLA, owning an overall record of 139-80 (.635). In her eight seasons in Westwood, the Bruins have finished in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships seven times, including a trip to the finals in 2004. As a player, Sampras Webster was a four-time All-American at UCLA from 1988-91, capturing the NCAA Doubles title (w/Allyson Cooper) as a freshman in 1988.
