Canizares Takes Over Individual Lead In Puerto Rico

Alejandro Canizares shot a 5-under 67 in the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic on Monday to take a one-shot lead with an 8-under 136 (69-67). The Sun Devils moved into fourth at 6-under 570 (284-286), 18 shots back of leader Georgia Tech at 558 (280-278).

Kendall Critchfield fired a 69 for the second day and is tied for third at 6-under 138.

Pat Moore is tied for 37th at 3-over 147 (74-73), Jesse Mueller is tied for 46th at 5-over 149 (72-77) while Niklas Lemke is tied for 75th at 10-over 154 (77-77).

Florida is in second at 562, while Oklahoma State is third at 565.

The Westin Rio Mar Golf Club (par-72, 6,945 yards) is hosting the 18-team event, which will have the final 18 holes Tuesday. Matt Henrdix of Clemson and Florida are the defending champions.

Canizares already has won the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge and the Arizona/Ping Intercollegiate this season. The Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge was held Oct. 25-26 at Bandon Dunes, Ore., while the Tucson hosted Arizona/Ping Intercollegiate Jan. 31-Feb. 1. He also won the 2004 ASU Thunderbird Invitational (Tempe, Ariz.), the 2003 NCAA Championship (Stillwater, Okla.) and the 2003 National Invitationa Tournament (Tucson, Ariz.).

Canizares entered the tournament with a 71.34 stroke average in six events on the year.

ASU next competes in the Las Vegas Founders Championships March 11-13, which it won last year.
