Cardinal Men In Fifth At Ashworth Invitational

The Stanford men's golf team shot rounds of 299 and 285 on the first day of competition at the Ashworth Invitational and sit in fifth place overall with a 584. Tennessee leads the event with a five-under par 563, followed by Southern California (567). Brigham Young and Georgia Southern are tied for third after carding a 571 on the North Ranch Country Club's par 71, 6,742 yard course.
Cardinal Matt Savage turned in rounds of 73 and 71 to card a two-over 144 and is tied for 17th overall. Teammate Kyle Gentry (80-68) is tied for 32nd along with senior Pat Phillips (74-74) with a six-over par 148. Freshman golfer Rob Grube is just a stroke behind with a 149 (77-72), tied for 35th. Kevin Blue carded rounds of 75 and 78 to tie for 52nd with a 153.
Georgia Southern's Aron Price leads the field individually heading into the final round after firing a nine-under par 133. Ross McGowan from Tennessee is second with a 136, followed by Washington's James Lepp (139). Tennessee's David Skinns is fourth (141) while six players are tied for fifth with a 142.
Final round action concludes on Tuesday at the North Ranch Country Club with tee times beginning at 8 a.m.
