OSU Takes Ninth At Texas A&M 'Mo'morial

March 1, 2005

BRYAN, Tex.- - In a final round that saw increasingly higher scores throughout the field, the Oregon State women's golf team finished the Texas A&M 'Mo'morial Tuesday in ninth place at the par-72 Traditions Golf Club. OSU posted a team score of 977.

'It was a disappointing ninth because I really feel that we have the talent to place higher,' said OSU head coach Risë Lakowske. 'We did move up two spots today, so that was a positive.'

Freshman Julie Uhrik had the low round of the day for the Beavers, firing a 79. Uhrik carded nothing worse than bogey in the final round.

'We had a lot of course management issues on this very difficult course,' added Lakowske.

'Our three freshmen are not familiar with the course and didn't know how to manage it very well, but this will be a good learning experience and will serve as good preparation for the rest of the season.'

Junior Leah Whiting came into the final day tied for 11th but struggled in a round that produced many bogeys but no birdies. She finished tied for 31st with a 243.

Southern Methodist capitalized on a poor finish by host and second-round leader Texas A&M and pulled out a one-stroke victory over the Aggies with a team total of 942. Kent State also tied for second.

Illinois State's Samantha Richdale narrowly held on to her second-round lead to earn individual medalist honors by one stroke over Kent State's Gabby Wedding. Richdale posted a 14-over 230.

Sophomore Jill Ferrante finished tied for 46th with a 247 while freshman Jessi Gebhardt and senior Alex Lucio tied for 48th, one stroke behind Ferrante. Gebhardt had an 80 in the final round, which included the Beavers' only birdie on the day.

Uhrik finished with a 256.

'They gave it their all and we're proud of them,' said Lakowske.

The Beavers next travel south to Eugene to play in the Oregon Duck Invitational, Mar. 21-22 at Shadow Hills Country Club.
