Pac-10 Softball Player/Pitcher Of The Week Named
March 1, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- STANFORD junior shortstop Lauren Lappin has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Softball Player of the Week, and ARIZONA junior Alicia Hollowell has been named Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 22-Mar. 1, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Lappin, from Anaheim, Calif., helped the Stanford softball team to a 5-0 record and tournament championship at the Stanford Invitational last weekend. She hit .462 (6-of-13) with seven runs scored, six RBI and two stolen bases in victories over UC Davis, Texas Tech, Auburn, Alabama-Birmingham and Sacramento State. Lappin was perfect in the field, with seven putouts and eight assists. She also drew two walks (no strikeouts) and hit a sacrifice fly. Among the starters, Lappin leads the team this year with a .458 batting average, 22 hits, 23 runs scored and five stolen bases.
Hollowell, from Suisun, Calif., threw two no-hitters against Sam Houston and Birmingham Southern as she combined for 31 strikeouts in both games. She allowed only three hits against No. 11 Baylor on Feb. 27, while striking out 15 and walking two. Arizona went 4-0 at the Baylor Invitational, moving its overall record to 13-0 on the year.
In 21 innings pitched, Hollowell gave up only 3 hits, accumulated 46 strikeouts and pitched three complete-game shutouts including two no-hitters. She improved to 8-0 and has 137 strikeouts in 61.2 innings of work this season, which is the best in the nation per 7 innings. Hollwell has six shutouts, three of them no-hitters this year. It was the first back-to-back no-hitter for Arizona since Nancy Evans (1995) and has only been accomplished one other time by Debby Day (1992). The junior pitcher is one shy of tying Arizona's career record of eight no-hitters, which was set by Jennie Finch and Susie Parra. Over the weekend, Hollowell also broke Finch's school career strikeout record of 1,028 after her 14th strikeout against Baylor, bringing her career total to 1,029.
This is the second weekly honor for Lappin, and the 12th for Hollowell. The awards are the 29th and 92nd all-time honors for the Cardinal and Wildcats, respectively.
