UCLA Track & Field Open Outdoor Season at Home on Saturday, March 5

March 1, 2005

The No. 11 UCLA men will take a break from the indoor track season to host the UCLA Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 5 at Drake Stadium. The meet will feature the Bruins, Cal Poly SLO, Cal State Fullerton and Cal State LA, along with open competitors, beginning at 8:00 am with the women's hammer throw. This will be the first meet in which athletes can qualify for the NCAA West Regional Championships, hosted by Oregon May 27-28.

Last weekend, the men's team won its fourth consecutive MPSF title in Seattle, WA as seniors Yoo Kim and Nick Thornton, along with junior Craig Everhart led the Bruins. Kim won the pole vault in a new Korean National Record jump of 18-4.75, just missing the indoor school record (18-5.25, Mike Tully, 1978) by half an inch. Thornton won the 800m (1:51.07), while Everhart won the 400m in a time of 46.59. The Distance Medley Relay team of seniors Ben Aragon and Denye' Versher, freshman Mike Haddan and senior John Rankin also won, running 9:42.53.

With NCAA Indoor just two weeks away, three Bruins are almost assured a spot in the championships meet: Kim, Everhart and Thornton. Kim ranks second in the nation in the pole vault, Thornton ranks 14th in the 800m (1:48.72), and Everhart has the ninth best 4-00m time (46.36) in the nation. The DMR also looks likely to content for a title as it ranks fourth in the nation with a time of 9:35.45.
