March 3, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington State sophomore Kate Benz was named an All-Pacific-10 Conference Women's Basketball Honorable Mention selection, conference commissioner Tom Hansen announced Thursday.
Benz's honorable mention accolade follows up an honorable mention nod to the conference's all-freshman team for the 6-foot-2 forward from Portland, Ore.
With her 9.1 rebound average, Benz ended the regular season with a .6 advantage over Oregon's Cathrine Kraayeveld to become the first Cougar to lead the conference in rebounding. With 247 rebounds, Benz is fifth on the school's single-season rebounding list.
In addition to rebounding, Benz is ranked in the conference's top 10 in several categories. She leads the conference in defensive rebounding (6.67/game), is fifth in offensive rebounding (2.48/game), and seventh in minutes played (31.96). Additionally, she leads the team and is 14th in scoring (10.7 ppg).
Benz started the season off with a bang, posting a double-double with a career-high 23 points along with 11 rebounds in the 61-48 win over Boise State, Nov. 19. That would be the first of eight double-doubles for Benz, which is second only to Arizona's Shawntinice Polk (nine) for the Pac-10 lead. At one point this season, Benz posted five double-doubles over a six-game stretch.
WSU, seeded ninth in the Pac-10 Conference Tournament at San Jose's HP Pavilion, faces No. 8 California Friday. Tip-off is approximately 8:15 p.m.
